A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilitiesforces that are facing cuts under the Obama administrations plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility. That statement tells us much about the presidents mindset.
The specific mention of missile defense is worrisome enough. Mr. Obama has retreated from the missile defense plan that was negotiated with European allies during the George W. Bush administration. Apparently, he is signaling Moscow that he intends to retreat further. The clear implication from the presidents comments is that he cannot tell the American people before the election what he plans to do after the election.
In addition, there is the phrase on all these issues, implying more is at stake than just missile defense.
Article: Obama plans double cross on missile defense
When it comes to keeping America safe, we shouldnt be too flexible:

I seriously suspect there's more going on there than meets the eye. Obama and Putin are indeed in bed together. Both (Chavez and the ChiComs, too) seek a "new world order", with them all being stronger and the US being (substantially) weaker. The Russians are masters of deception. They play 3D chess while most of us, unfortunately, suck at simple checkers.
Gertz has a way of getting excited over a tiny bit of info. The notion that Ivan was taking a Carribean cruise and our SSN’s didn’t know about it is somewhat silly. We wouldn’t try to stop Ivan from taking his cruise, probly checking in with Hugo in Venzuela, but we dam sure know he was there.-—————————Interesting thing-—the russians don’t have a clue about building quiet subs. To get speed they go for power, large machinery, etc. On a good day you can hear one go by FROM THE BEACH. And Ivan doesn’t want to spend money on sound isolators, rubber hoses and all those dozens of other small things necessary to keep machine noise away from water.-———————————The interesting question here is who shot their mouth off about the russian sub being there, if it was, and what is the purpose of the “exposure” ? I’m pretty sure the guys who tail Ivan didn’t head for the closest mike to yell “Ivan was here”.
Clintoon shut it down, said we did not need it cause Russia was our friend.
The cruise missile on a Russian Sub I believe goes 200 miles at Mach 2 to foil anti missile systems then drops to cruise for final flight path. Such a strike from offshore USA could wipe out all major costal cities, and kill 75% of America’s population in aprox 15 minutes.
Good first strike, and much cheaper too.
Really? Did anyone tell the Navy that?
Great link, thanks. And this from that link:
Today, while the Navy maintains a number of SOSUS arrays in either operational or standby status, only three shore facilities at Dam Neck, Virginia, Whidbey Island, Washington, and St. Mawgan, United Kingdom8 remain to process their dwindling output. With few possibly-hostile, nuclear-powered submarines still operating at sea and modern, quiet, diesel-electric boats essentially undetectable at long range by passive means, theres not a lot to listen for anymore, and targets of potential interest are rare.
Yea, Clintoon did cut back greatly on funding SOSUS putting many sections offline. I remember even those days in my early conservative awakening being rather miffed about that thinking that is was foolish savings.
We have at least 5 Ohio class submarines on alert at all times. Ready for war 24/7. Together they carry 480 thermonuclear warheads.
More than enough to the economic potential of Russia.
Correct. Obama is immaterial to the fact that the Russians have used him like a rag doll. It is Obama's supporters and the RINO/DINO's who are promoting a No Fly Zone in Syria, that are being deceived. They simply did not predict Russia and China would defend Syria all the way to the point of annihilating US cities in 10 minutes.
The fact that the sub left, means one of two things. Either a new one is on station and dark or the Syrian crisis has been resolved behind closed doors.
There is only one reason why we heard that. Obama's supporters wanted that to be heard. It automatically makes people think a lame duck is still in play. He is not. We are dealing with a Chicago Communist Mafia. Everything is deception. Everything.
Obama was groomed from early childhood to be a supporter of the Communist Soviet Union. His "Uncle Frank" (Frank Marshall Davis) was a diehard supporter. He (Obama) was very active in the pro-Soviet "disarmament movement" as a college student in the 80s. He is bending over backwards today to appease the Russians in every way he can. KGB Putin longs for the 'good old days' of the Communist Soviet Union. With "Comrade Obama"'s hot and eager help, they are moving fast in that direction.
Then there are those, even here at FR, who admire and trust KGB Putin. They show up on every one of these threads trying to minimize or outright dismiss any potential threats the Russians may pose.
The article also pointed out that technology made a lot of the sites redundant. Computer software replaced the human techs that used to monitor the paper printouts. But the fact remains that in the late 80’s and through the 90’s the Soviet navy was a mere shadow of its former self. There was no reason not to mothball SOSUS because there was no threat to watch for. But it was never destroyed. Not by Clinton or anyone else.
Yes. Know all about that. But in his own book, Obama clearly states that if the political winds shift in an ugly direction, he will stand with the Muslims. He only gave the Russians a reset button. He bowed and offered his services to the Saudi King. The Russians were horrified by what happened in Libya. They will not let it happen in Syria, unless Obama gives them much more then a reset button.
Payback for the US sub operating in Polyarny a few years ago?
Hmmm...which time? ( don’t know nothing...I’ve been debriefed lol)
The ASW mission has been given short shrift since the fall of the Berlin Wall. We don’t even fly carrier-based fixed wing ASW aircraft any more (the last S-3 Viking squadron was retired in 2009), and I am sure there has been similar lack of emphasis on ASW in the surface fleet. I sure hope the SSN guys have kept things up in this space, but they can’t do it alone. They have their hands pretty full keeping the CVNs safe.
IIRC, the Nazis got just as close with their U-Boats in WWII. We need to bring back those old Catalina PBY flying boats and put them back on patrol.
re: liquid metal cooling I think you are confusing Akula class with Alfa class.
..Elbows on the table...two handed grip on the food...what a clown.
