Did anyone tell the Navy...

Great link, thanks. And this from that link:

Today, while the Navy maintains a number of SOSUS arrays in either operational or standby status, only three shore facilities at Dam Neck, Virginia, Whidbey Island, Washington, and St. Mawgan, United Kingdom8 – remain to process their dwindling output. With few possibly-hostile, nuclear-powered submarines still operating at sea and modern, quiet, diesel-electric boats essentially undetectable at long range by passive means, there’s not a lot to listen for anymore, and targets of potential interest are rare.

Yea, Clintoon did cut back greatly on funding SOSUS putting many sections offline. I remember even those days in my early conservative awakening being rather miffed about that thinking that is was foolish savings.

The article also pointed out that technology made a lot of the sites redundant. Computer software replaced the human techs that used to monitor the paper printouts. But the fact remains that in the late 80’s and through the 90’s the Soviet navy was a mere shadow of its former self. There was no reason not to mothball SOSUS because there was no threat to watch for. But it was never destroyed. Not by Clinton or anyone else.
