Court Rules That NRC Can No Longer Accept Assurances a Permanent Waste Repository Is Coming
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it would stop issuing licenses for nuclear plants until it addresses problems with its nuclear-waste policy that were raised by a recent federal appeals court decision

You are welcome to invite a Nuke dump to open in YOUR state!
Yucca was chosen only because Nevada had so little representation in congress at the time, period.
We have enough “Down Winder’s” as it is, we have plenty of contaminated land, we’ve already been screwed “For the national good”.
Nuke dumps are just dumb, no matter where they are located, technology has moved beyond just throwing “waste” down a hole to be forgotten.
Yucca mountain was specifically designed to store the material. Why not do so and then build facilities nearby to recycle the material; thus creating jobs that Nevada sorely needs? ....France has recycled such material for years and it’s a safe and successful process.
I agree. This issue has gone on for way, way too long.
And it is not just how the plants are storing their rods, many of those pools are at capacity already. And some are over-capacity, but the public isn’t aware of the problem at an educated level.
It will be interesting when the order comes down that these plants be shut-down due to storage issues. Right now it is just the permitting of new plants, but eventually it will be the existing plants.
The environmental movement is responsible for this. 0bama is shutting down coal plants and coal mines....the EPA/NRC is stopping nuclear permits etc. If we keep going at this rate people in the Northern states will be freezing to detah in the winter when the windmills freeze solid and the solar panals are covered in snow.
In case you haven’t realized they are shutting down the coal fired plants and mines too.
Not sure what you are talking about?
According to the NRC:
Reprocessing refers generally to the processes necessary to separate spent nuclear reactor fuel into material that may be recycled for use in new fuel and material that would be discarded as waste. There are no reprocessing facilities currently operating in the United States, but there are facilities operating in foreign countries.

I don't think they should. but most of those coal plants are being converted to natural gas thanks to fracking.
IIUC, that “waste” can be reprocessed for use again and again. France can do it, but we can’t?
Sure. This way he gets to make noises that sound like support for more power plants while he's campaigning and then kill them all by remote control using his drone regulatory minions without getting his hands dirty.
Geez, just allow reprocessing of spent fuel rods and the problem is largely resolved. Shoot the rest of the high level wastes off to burn up in the sun.
