Six Vatican Ambassadors Start Catholics for Romney Outreach

Former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican
Dr. Mary Ann Glendon

Six former Vatican ambassadors have banded together to lead a new outreach for Mitt Romney presidential campaign to encourage Catholic voters to support him over pro-abortion President Barack Obama in November. The issue of abortion is one of the reasons for their decision to endorse Romney, as they explain in a new letter announcing the effort.

Catholics for Romney National Co-Chairs and Former U.S. Ambassadors to the Holy See include Frank Shakespeare, Tom Melady, Ray Flynn, Jim Nicholson, Francis Rooney, and Mary Ann Glendon. Together, they wrote the following letter supporting the former governor:

Fellow Catholics,

We are all called to advance the moral teachings of Christianity in the life of our country. Where the stakes are highest – in the defense of life, liberty, and human dignity – we have a duty to act that is greater and more urgent than allegiance to any political party.

In the election of 2012, this conviction has united all of us – each a former ambassador of the United States to the Holy See – in support of Governor Mitt Romney’s candidacy for president. Whatever issues might dominate the presidential campaign from now until November, our concerns lie with fundamental rights, beginning with religious liberty.

While the current administration has brought our first freedom under direct assault by imposing government mandates that completely disregard religious conscience, Governor Romney believes that freedom to live one’s faith is essential to liberty and human fulfillment. And he has pledged himself to removing those federal mandates immediately.

While the current administration has now put its weight on the side of those who propose to redefine the meaning of marriage itself, Governor Romney has stood firm in defending this sacred institution. In the White House, just as he did in the Massachusetts State House, he will defend the institution of marriage before the Congress, the courts, and the country.

Where the current administration has shown its sympathy for the pro-abortion lobby, Mitt Romney will be a faithful defender of life in all its seasons. And he understands the special duty of people of faith to serve in this cause. As Governor Romney recently said, “From the beginning, this nation trusted in God, not man. Religious liberty is the first freedom in our Constitution. And whether the cause is justice for the persecuted, compassion for the needy and the sick, or mercy for the child waiting to be born, there is no greater force for good in the nation than Christian conscience in action.”

These are the words of a man we believe can be a great force for good in this nation. We are Democrats, Independents, and Republicans, but on this question we are united in faith and in action. We urge our fellow Catholics, and indeed all people of good will, to join with us in this full-hearted effort to elect Governor Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States.

National Co-Chairs, Catholics for Romney

Frank Shakespeare (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 1986-1989)

Tom Melady (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 1989-1993)

Ray Flynn (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 1993-1997)

Jim Nicholson (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 2001-2005)

Francis Rooney (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 2005-2008)

Mary Ann Glendon (U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See 2008-2009)

If that’s what you’ll settle for, then you’re guaranteed to get just about anything. 2008 and 2012 are sure proof of that.

Isn’t Larry great. Man I’m glad he’s on the air. He’s a voice of reason for the Black community in Los Angeles. For that matter, he’s a voice of reason for the rest of us too. I really like the guy.

These useless morons are where in calling for excommunication of baby killers like Pelosi?

But apparently, they are all in support of the mormon cult leader Bishop from KOLOB, who was like 55 years old when all of a sudden he decided that baby killing was wrong, especially if he was going to get drooling imbeciles to vote for him for POTUS on a GOP ticket.

I wouldn't piss on this degenerate scumbag if he was on fire.

Let's hope this silver spoon idiots ride to KOLOB is a smooth one, and he achieves GOD status with minimum cost to the American taxpayer.

Well, the point is, he’s a steenking liar. Has no core conservative values whatsoever. Will say or do whatever he feels he has to say or do to get himself elected. But his core instinct is that of a big government statist. Proven by appointing liberal judges, knuckling under to the activist judiciary, supporting Roe v Wade as “settled” law, supporting gay rights, gays in the military, supporting the bailouts and the stimulus, supporting cap and trade, global warming, and ROMNEYCARE!!

He still brags about RomneyCare today, still worries about global warming, still refuses to fight or rein in liberal judges, still supports gays in the military, and has promised to trim here and there and to rearrange the deck chairs on the US Titanic rather than making the deep cuts in government that must be made to right the sinking ship.

And he’s still a steenking LIAR!! Once a liar, always a LIAR!! And he just told you that he IS a steenking LIAR!!

The people of Massachusetts, the MA Supreme Court and Legislature were for same sex marriage, Mitt was against it. He fought well and lost. .

The MA Supreme Court did, indeed, order the legislature (which overall was then opposed to ‘gay marriage’) to draw up legislation within a very short period of time to make it legal. If you want to fault anyone, fault the Supreme Judicial Court of MA.

BTW, I forgot to thank you for this article. It’s great to fire up the Catholic conservative vote - and to bring new Catholic voters to our side via this issue.

Number One mission in this election is to boot out this regime and it’s statism and secularism, it’s attack on culture and religion.

This needs to be done in landslide proportions. As Rush said today: “ on November 6th, Obama’s gonna get Chick-fil-A’d.”

The Holy Father, USCCB are strong on this issue and their role, these ambassadors are stepping up, and individual catholics have their job to do as well.

You say that “as long as the Republican Party can loft these stinkers and get them elected, they will never ALLOW US to put someone in the office who will roll back the laws that are chocking our nation.” It is OUR job to fight the Republican Party, and agree upon and elect a conservative in 2016. It's not a matter of being “allowed”, it's a matter of fighting for a true conservative candidate, and working like hell to get him elected in 2016. If soldiers of wars past refused to fight, because the enemy “would not allow them to win”, we would have lost many a war.

But, if oboma wins in 2012, you can forget all about your above mentioned statement about the Republican Party, etc. We won't have a opportunity to cast a vote for anyone again, because dictator oboma will crush the right to vote, and only oboma will rule. Strike now while the iron is hot is an old saying, and so applicable to what we are dealing with now.

You've made your choice. And We the People will go on without you, and win this war.

I agree with you. There are those of us who see the big picture, and understand the strategy. And there are those who do not. I pray that they will see the light, and if they don't, We the People will go on without them and kick obozo’s arse out of the White House in November.

Nice try. I’m not going to feel one bit guilty for not voting for Leftists. You can go ahead and fight beside them. Count me out. Look for me, I’ll be the guy going in the opposite direction.

Now, how do you propose we soldiers vote real Conservatives in as the nominee, when the RNC has allowed a system to be set up that allows Democrats to vote for them too? Do you think that makes them more likely to be Conservative? I don’t. The RNC evidently does.

When this type of system was set up in California several years ago (the public voted on it), neither the state Republican party leadership, or the RNC raised any objection to it whatsoever.

Since we’re using military analogies, how do you think WWII would have wound up if we allowed the Germans to fight on our side too? Sound like a great idea?

That’s exactly what’s taking place in the early primary states. I don’t even get to vote for a nominee before they’re already selected. It has been decades since I have been able to influence the nomination. In fact, living in California, I’m not sure I have every had an opportunity to vote before the nomination was determined, but not formalized at the convention.

Rome2000:

First of all, if you disagree with supporting Romney as a prudent electoral strategy, you should put it in prudential terms, as our friend DoughtyOne does. (Tip o' the hat to you, Doughty.) Evidence sways thoughtful opinion. Reckless insult does not.

Second, these six eminent anti-Obama Catholics are not "useless morons." That you would say so is rash judgment and slander. Rash judgment and slander are still sins.

Third, your language is not only offensive to the people you have maligned, it also has the distinct disadvantage of being stupid. It will not gain you even the little benefit you perhaps hope for, which is swaying the opinions of thoughtful FReepers. You forfeit the gains you might otherwise have made through competent debate.

Fourth, you don't know these six ambassadors views on the denial of Holy Communion to abortion supporters (a denial which I, by the way, think is mandatory under Canon 915.) Many good people who were against abortion (e.g. Mother Teresa) never voiced a public opinion on this canonical question. As for the opinions of Glendon, Flynn and the rest, you do not know. To presume you do know, without evidence, is malicious credulity.

Take care. Cool down and try again. I will listen.

Yes, I meant UNquestionable, indeed.

My internet connection was very poor at the time, so I missed that mistake. I hope it was clear in context.

The GERMANS were the enemy, and our soldiers fought them and won the war. Our soldiers did not stop to consider that maybe the German enemy might not “allow” them to win. They had the fire in their bellies to fight and win, and they WON.

Your statement that the GOP will not “allow” We the People to support and elect a true conservative in the 2016 elections suggests that you will not fight to select and vote for that conservative candidate in 2016. We do not have to ask the GOP for permission to elect a Conservative. We fight for the right to select and elect instead. Big difference. Enough talk, we need action and we need to join forces in mega numbers if we are to win at the polls.

In closing, help the cause, and you know full well what the cause is, if you're been reading any of the articles on oboma and what he is currently/previously doing to this country, transgression by transgression. And if you do understand the CAUSE and the STRATEGY of why we must all come together and vote for the official candidate running against obozo who has the electoral votes, we welcome you aboard, we patriots needs a mega turnout at the polls. And if you chose to go another way, you won't be the first person who went left in elections and wars of years past, while the men and women of this country, who fully understood the dangers they were facing, went right, and won the elections and the wars.

PS: Get the hell out of California...it belongs to the left. You're wasting your time and efforts. Save yourself, at least, if you won't fight and help us to save the rest of the country. If not, please step out of the way..We the People have work to do.
