The United States may break with a controversial tradition and dip its flag to Britain's leaders at the opening ceremony for the London Olympics, U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) CEO Scott Blackmun said on Thursday.

Thought it might be something like that that established the tradition. American thuggery!

Hey SandyInSeattly........I don’t even know where to begin with your statement.

So, I’ll just say this......GO F**K YOURSELF.

That flag doesn’t dip for anyone or anything......EVER.

By the way, we won the war way back when. We can do what we want.

If individual Americans want to bow or whatever to their foreign hosts, that’s their business. When someone represents the United States of America, then no.

We’re on British soil, so I don’t think I have an issue with this. It would be done out of respect for the host country, not to demean us.

The U.S. Flag is NEVER dipped...ANYWHERE!!!

Why is everyone making the assumption that our team will even carry the Stars and Stripes much less dip it? It's 2012 - evolve and get with the program:
see the big flag in the background?

see the bigger flag in the background:

"We’re moving backwards, people. "

We've been doing that since the mid sixties, in my estimation.

Take it easy.

I don’t like it either, but dipping the flag to the host country at the opening of the Olympics, is hardly a “slap in the face to ALL military past and present that died for that flag”.

Thank you for posting the flag ettiquette.

How could you not be familiar with flag protocol? Your User Page says you're a retired Marines officer.

We have NEVER dipped our Flag at ANY Olympics of the modern era. Whether we were the host nation or not. PERIOD!

Maybe that dumb bastard in the White House and his acolytes can have the flag bearer bow when he dips the flag. If he can kiss some Commie’s ass on the march past, it’ll be an Obama trifecta.

“This flag dips to no earthly king.”

Apparently it dips to Obozo.

Humm

I think I disagree

I know it is hard to grasp but dipping our Flag is something we don’t do because of pride. We have already lost too much pride as it is.

It’s just not right, you know?

"is hardly a slap in the face to ALL military past and present that died for that flag"

I say it would be a pretty good slap in the face of these two patriots.

"We recognize no Sovereign but God, and no King but Jesus!"

April 18, 1775, on the eve of the Revolutionary War after a British major ordered John Adams, John Hancock, and those with them to disperse in: "In the name of George the Sovereign King of England."

American Mariel Zagunis has won gold in the individual sabre at the past two Olympics.

It would be done out of respect for the host country, not to demean us.

In acknowledgement of the fact that this Nation rose, and endures ONLY by Divine Providence, the flag of this Nation bows ONLY to Almighty God, Himself.

If anything, the Brits should dip THEIR flag to our Olympic Team. We've yanked their chestnuts outta the fire TWICE, without regrets. Apart from the United States, and Divine Intervention, there would, today, be NO UK on the face of this globe, nor any France, nor any of a host of other European States.

Our flag bows to NO man, to NO Nation, to NO Earthly power. NOT NOW; NOT EVER.

Yes, but more to try to recapture some American votes than to honor the British hosts of the Olympics.
(Speaking personally, I am very upset about how he’s treated our allies. And even more upset with his apologizing and demeaning America everywhere he goes. I do NOT support lowering our flag for anybody, but in this one instance since UK is the host country of the Olympics and this is apparently a tradition of sorts for visiting nations to honor their hosts, I would say OK...especially since he has been so insulting to the Brits. But somebody needs to tell him to stop the ridiculous apologizing for America, USA has done a whole lot more good in the world than any other country I can think of..... at least, we did a whole lot of good most of the time until 2008).
