President Obama has added his voice to the push for limits on Americans' gun use in the wake the massacre last week at a movie theater in Colorado.
Obama, speaking Wednesday evening to the National Urban League, affirmed his belief in Americans' right to own guns, but he singled out assault rifles as better suited for soldiers than civilians.
"I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms," Obama said. "But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not on the streets of our cities."

“My question is whether the limitation of only firing semi-auto would disqualify it from consideration as an acceptable assault rifle for military use in actual practice.”
My, non-expert, answer would be no. Being semi-auto only would not render a weapon useless for military use. It fact, it may actually make it more effective for the common soldier. The M16A2 is not trully a “full-auto.” In that mode the weapon will only fire a three round burst. The Army did this because “full auto” causes a lot of ammunition to be waisted. Plus, the weapon rapidly overheats on true full auto. When I originally was trained by the Army on the M16A1 (Vietnam era version), we had true “full auto.” I have been on a range and attempted to use the M16A1 in full auto. Didn’t work well, and the weapon overheated on me. I decided then, I would only use semi-auto if the situation called for me to bear military arms. Never happened during my time, and the Army has since gone to the M16A2 and other variants like the M4. I just checked with some Active Army folks and they tell me even the M4 is only “three round burst” on “full-auto.” I have heard the Marines have a version of the M16 that is a true full-auto.
I am NOT an expert on this.
I don’t understand why you are asking the question? What is your point?
It seems to me the terms “assault weapon” and “assault rifle” have been horribly abused. They say assault rifles are military weapons, but then describe weapons as “assault rifles” that seem to be dubious choices for something that would be considered a good candidate for a military battle weapon.
LOL!
“I forgot: 8) Same-sex marriage and wearing military uniforms at gay pride marches., 9)voting without an ID”
Yeah...yeah.....okay....pile it on : )
Actually, the patriots had muzzle loading rifles which were superior to the smooth bore muskets the British Regulars employed. In that context the common man had weaponry superior to that of the government.
And I see nothing wrong with that.
They put full auto back in the latest adopted versions of both the M-16 (A4) and M4 (A1) and removed the 3 round burst function. However, the version of the M-16A4 bought by the government is 3round burst for most units. The M-16A3 was also full auto, no burst. So our military’s gone back and forth on this.
Yes, but there have been more than one events. Some were suspended for pointing fingers at each other and the thumb going down.
Stuff we did all the time as kids. Didn’t harm us one damn bit. Some of us had cap pistols for play. Didn’t make us go and find dad’s gun and shoot a bunch of people. Adults and parents weren’t freaked out about such play.
It is so nanny state freaking ridiculous. I really blame it on primary schools doing their best to get men (solid male role models) out of teaching, and administration, in those primary schools, particularly elementary schools. REAL MEN. Not homos and perverts. Feminization of schools are the reason why dodge ball is not played, kickball the way we played it (like baseball) is not played anymore, because it’s not fair some kids do better than others. They don’t do running races for time anymore. Nothing competitive at all. (The kids still know who’s better and who wins, regardless, they aren’t stupid and we weren’t then either.)
That’s what the female gym teacher in my old elementary school said when I stopped by mid afternoon a few years ago.
When I went there 32+ years ago all grades had a male gym teacher who was great, and we did dodge ball - loved those gym periods with dodge ball - and kickball, and some obstacle course stuff, and races - timed - and even as a runt (year ahead) who wasn’t great, evne then I could still hit people out or catch a ball, or deflect it if I was holding a ball already.
;^)

Oh, I fully agree. It is just a “buzzword” used to paint a negative picture of something. The term “assault” is dubious at best.

Yes, they have. The M16A3 was only adopted by the Navy. I “thought” the Marines M-16A4 was full auto, but it is only 3 round burst. The M4A1 is full auto, but it is only issued to highly trained special forces like Rangers, Delta, etc. It takes a very well trained individual to use these light firearms in full auto. General purpose forces are being issued just the 3 round burst capable weapons. This makes sense to me....too many rounds flying unaimed. Besides, most squads will have a light machine gun issued to one in the squad (the M249 SAW in 5.56 Nato). At platoons they have medium machine guns (the M250 in 7.62 Nato).
I disagree. They now EXACTLY who is doing the violence but it makes good fodder for making guns illegal.
Ah thanks for the info on bandages.
You silly person, that's a document of negative liberties. It only says what the gubment can't do to you, not what it must do for you.
The A4 is available in both ‘action’ types, though. In the ‘as accepted’ specification they had and have both options, it’s just that so far they have opted only to buy the 3rd burst models. Both types are produced and are equally validly called the A4. The NSN number for the FA version is 1005-01-383-2872.
Some Marine and Army units adopted the M16A3 as well as the Navy, but in very small quantities.
There is no M250. Do you mean the M240B or M240G?
Obama’s mini-brain and motor-mouth are more of a danger to We the People than any “assault-weapons” the MSM could ever dream up....
“There is no M250. Do you mean the M240B or M240G?”
Thanks for the correction. I did mean the M240....M250 didn’t quite sound right. BTW - I have never seen a real M240 up close.....I haven’t gone to the range since the M60 was the medium machine gun!

Romney does not have a good record on 2nd Ammendment issues. He is NOT highly thought of in the NRA. So, don’t go apologizing too soon.
Obama is talking banning smack to pander to his base, Romney is attempting to sound conservative (and also pander), but his record does not support it. It is Romney’s modus operandi to “compromise” with liberals under the guise of “getting along.” He has never learned that some things can NEVER be compromised.
Both Obama and Romney will be bad for the country.
On the response to Aurora, at first blush, Romney appears better. However, he has a record that indicates he cannot be trusted.
I will say this....Obama is a fool to push for gun control. That will move more persons towards Romney (even if he is faking it).
Also, I remind all reading that FR is NOT a Pro-Romney site. It is anti-Obama and anti-GOPe candidates (like Romney). Jim Robinson has allowed ABOs to express that they will vote for Romney holding their noses....but when one starts actively SUPPORTING and BOOSTING a Romney campaign....you may have stepped over the line.
Don’t do it. Just as Obama, Romney is persona non grata here on FR. IF you don’t believe me, then ping Jim Robinson.
If he gets a 2nd term, America won’t even be recognizable and nobody will be allowed to own ag gun, except criminals.
Nothing you can say will make me vote for Obama and not vote for Romney.
