Republicans continue to hold an edge in Iowa voter registration, according to the latest figures from the secretary of states office.
From the Des Moines Register report:
619,452 Iowa voters are now registered Republican, compared to 598,074 Democrats. Both parties, however, are outnumbered by No Party voters, at 655,457.At the end of October 2008, just before Barack Obama won Iowa by 10 points, Democrats had an edge of 106,000 voters. In 2004, when George W. Bush won the state narrowly, the GOP had a 4.400 voter advantage.
Democrats held a lead in registrations for several years beginning in mid-2006, but fell behind Republicans earlier this spring.
In an e-mailed statement, Iowa Democratic Party spokesman Michael Hunt said additional Republican registrations in June were probably related to the unusually large number of contested GOP races in the June 5 primary election, rather than a new and specific preference for Republican policies over Democratic ones.
The trendline is positive for Iowa Republicans. Since April, in a key swing state that the most recent NBC News/Marist Poll reported was a presidential dead heat, the registration gap between the parties has grown from 4,000 voters to more than 21,000.

Iowa would be an important State to pick up.

Those are the ones we must go after and win over. I really think that we can pick up Iowa this time; I really do.
Well, I'm one of 'em.
BTW, what are they getting excited about, when the two remaining major choices for ‘12 POTUS are, both, leftists?
It's surprisingly diverse other than racially (where it's melanin-deprived). More Catholic, and more unionized in the east along the Mississippi River -- a part of the Dem-leaning Upper Mississippi Valley, like adjacent southwestern Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota; more Protestant, agricultural, and conservative in the west, more akin to Nebraska.
A Republican trend statewide, however modest, is a good sign. Iowa is a state well worth watching as an indicator of the national sentiment.
I have no earthly idea.
And somewhere a Democcratic strategist is trying to calculate the fastest route from Chicago to the Iowa state line....
Dirty little secret in Iowa - you drop the Independents that did not vote any time from the ‘08 general to the present, and the number drops off substantially to less than both parties in most places.
Drop off the same for Reps and Dems and things come out about equal unless the original disparity was huge. Which is not to say Independents still aren’t important, but we have to make sure to turn out the GOP vote too.
Where uninformed people hark over Harkin, you know IA will always be a tough nut to crack.
Shouldn’t be close. We all have access to sources other than the MSP.
I can’t bring myself to talk to them. Includes family.
This isn’t opinion’s any more, If your head is in your ass, not my job to pull it out. We have a Country, way of life, and a future for our kids to think about.
Democrats have to be defeated, but along the way the RNC needs cleaned out!
It’s TEA for me, Our way of life depends on it!
No, it is because of the unusually high number of folks PO'd at O and the Demonrats for the unbelievable burdens they have placed on us, our children, our grandchildren, our great grandchildren, etc.

Problem is: Many in the Conservative ranks of the GOP say they are NOT voting for Romney, no matter what. Many on this website; for example. So, why not go after the Indys whom you at least can count on them voting Republican once you get them to the polls? I dunno; it’s just disheartening when people who are supposed to be on our team won’t play ball because they don’t like the manager.
Well then, that makes all those people frauds, supposed conservatives who apparently don’t seem to understand that the Constitution created more elected offices than just President.
We may not like who we have for President, but then again the President doesn’t make laws. Two of the most important laws we can pass right now are state level: voter ID and limiting public sector bargaining (including requiring they pay for their insurance and retirement plus no more state collection of union dues).
Do that and you cut Democrats off at the knees. So for the love of God get out there and vote.
Good news bump
I lived in Iowa from 2005 - 2008 and from a personal standpoint I don’t think Iowa will break for Obama. In 2008 he won because Iowa drank the hope and change Kool Aid that they were getting a messiah that would lead this country to a new age of prosperity. Now he’s probably perceived as another a obnoxious liberal Chicagoan.
