Where do milk, eggs and bacon come from? One in three youths don't know
Daily Telegraph ^ | 6-14-12 | Telegraph reporters

More than a third of 16 to 23-year-olds (36%) do not know bacon comes from pigs and four in 10 (40%) failed to link milk with an image of a dairy cow, with 7% linking it to wheat, the poll of 2,000 people for charity Leaf (Linking Environment and Farming) found. Some 41% correctly linked butter to a dairy cow, with 8% linking it to beef cattle, while 67% were able to link eggs to an image of a hen but 11% thought they came from wheat or maize.

I'm still around, a myriad of things has kept me away. Ranging from PC problems, to family crises.

Not surprising. When Jamie Oliver went to Huntington, WV a class of 3rd graders couldn’t name any vegetables.

For long term keep of game meat without means to freeze.

Now, suppose you don't have electical power. Do you really want to make 100-500 lbs of jerky (Deer or Moose)?

Charcuterie is the art of making sausage, bacon, how to cure a ham - basically how to preserve a whole animal without freezing .... just like great-great grandpa used to do.

The chicken had to get laid before the egg could.

That picture has always bothered me, though I couldn't quite get why.... clearly it's intended to show that the lump of coal has an electrical outlet (female socket), with an orange extension cord connector (male prongs) plugged into it...

Now I know! The orange plug is a female (socket) end, not a male (prongs) plug!

It's TWO FEMALES! Connected together!! Making energy (or something) flow!!!

See here.... This sort of same-sex connection is not a good thing to be showing in public. I mean, I know about "artistic license" and all that, but it is widely acknowledged that most artists are homosexuals, and "license" means "anything goes", which brings all sorts of dirty images to mind.

So much for "clean" coal.

Is a /sarc tag necessary? :)

I've made it sixty years and this is the first time I am hearing this joke?

Brilliant man!

That no electricity was my point. In a SHTF scenario and on the move constantly by shank’s mare, that bacon, sausage & ham just ain’t gonna happen. The survival meat will have to be preserved in the rough, sun dried or over a wood fire.

If you are on the move during a SHTF scenario - you are 100% correct. You can dry meat and make jerky in a single day. Packs well. If you have to keep moving - Jerky is about the only viable solution you have.

If you have a week or so to sit tight and re-build or secure a homestead; then I’m all about the bacon and sausage. Once made, it will be worth it’s weight in gold. I think either of us would trade quite a bit for some variety in our meals - eatting Jerky all the time would get old in a hurry.

If things get really bad, there will be a lot of long pig out there. Don’t know if they will make good bacon and ham, but a well seasoned sausage should be a go. (;>)

“If we had some ham, we could have ham and eggs...if we had some eggs.” Old depression era joke.

That joke actually predates the depression. I collect really old records and have a recorded comedy skit from 1922 that repeats the joke verbatim. In fact, the joke may have originated with this recording. Luckily, the same recording is available free online: http://ia700202.us.archive.org/10/items/CollinsHarlan_part1/CollinsHarlan-HamEggs.mp3
