When rumours of a Total Recall remake started circulating a couple of years ago, Guardian writer Ben Child gave voice to sentiments felt by many fans of the original film:
Total Recall hardly needs a remake. While it was one of the last big-budget movies before the CGI revolution, its over-the-top look has helped it stay timeless. Furthermore, modern Hollywood simply has no equivalent to Schwarzenegger that preposterous, yet magnificently magnetic screen presence. Who could carry off the mix of silly and serious required to make this an exciting adventure?

They just cannot come up with anything original anymore.
I don’t remember. Am I?
What was the old Total Recall. I forget.
What a great movie. Someone should combine total recall with the running man.
Yes, a Mars vacation...
Wait, I have more memories, a vacation in SPAIN,
a vacation in Hawii, one in Bali, one in oh I
forget where but I have a memory of it probably
planted by the press deep in my brain.
Still his wife/keeper was kinda cute especially
when she wanted to be tied up.
Not to mention the multi faceted mars bar girl.
Not really, but I am looking forward to a very good bottle of Pinot Noir this Friday night...
Along with "Bridesmaids 2".
The machine gun-firing midget prostitute was entertaining as well.

The new amalgam:
Total Running Man
Running Man Recall
Running Total, Recall Man
Sharon Stone was hot in that movie....
No.
We can remember it for you wholesale.
No one will ever write sci-fi like PKD.
No, can’t out do Arnold!
Dick seems to have more of his short stories adapted into films than any other author I can name, yet his stories are often only somewhat recognizable in the final film. Do Androids * has some bizarre elements in it, what on earth was the protag. concerned about getting his sheep for?
On the topic here, apparently hollywood has done enough studies showing that remaking a known quantity film will make them a predictable amount of money, vs. speculating with an unknown script for the same release slot....I don’t even bother seeing any of the remakes, there is no way hollywood won’t terribly screw up anything they touch these days.
Soon:
Hollywood continues to show its imagination with remakes of:
* Casablanca
* 12 Angry Men
* Marty
* Gone with the wind
* Ben Hur (now, Ben Him?)
* 5 Easy Pieces
* Easy Rider
(note how I added some modern classics for the kiddies who want to redo easier stuff)
There is an old Hollywood saying that you can’t underestimate the audience.
If this remake succeeds, it is proof the adage is true.
