Outside The Boat

May 12, 2012

Katsushika Hokusai was one of the most prolific and celebrated artists in Japanese history. Between 1826 and 1833, when he was in his mid-60s and early 70s, he created his greatest work—a series of color woodblock prints titled Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji. Among those paintings was his masterpiece: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. This painting, created during a time of financial and emotional struggles for Hokusai, shows a towering wall of water edged with clawlike foam about to crash down on three slim boats full of rowers.

Psalm 107 also tells a story of people in peril at sea. Afloat on the waves, “they mount up to the heavens, [and] they go down again to the depths.” And as a result, “their soul melts because of trouble” (v.26). Eventually, the sailors send an S.O.S. to God, and He responds by smoothing out the sea and guiding them to their destination (vv.28-30).

When we face desperate circumstances, we tend to look to other people for guidance and comfort. They are in the same boat, however—lost in an ocean of life’s ups and downs. Only God is outside the boat, sovereign, stable, and strong enough to calm the storms (vv.24-25,29). Facing trouble? Call on Him!

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain? —Owens
We worship a God who is greater than our greatest problem.

Read: Psalm 107:23-32

They mount up to the heavens, [and] they go down again to the depths. —Psalm 107:26
Bible in a Year:
Esther 4-7

The Isley Brothers had a raw sound, best typified by “Twist and Shout”, their iconic hit from 1961. When they signed with Motown in 1966, Berry Gordy handed them over to Holland, Dozier and Holland who tried to tame their sound and whiten it. This was a mistake, but it produced a song that just missed the Top 10. When their contract expired, the Isleys went elsewhere and produced some fine hits with their blacker sound in the early Seventies. This song had been intended for the Supremes.

By 1966, the Supremes were still the major franchise at Motown, and Holland, Dozier and Holland got them in the Top 10 four times.

This song sold well but lacks the punch of their best material.

The Supremes: “Love is Like an Itching in My Heart”

This song has a great, mysterious minor key intro.

The Supremes: “My World is Empty Without You”

Once in a while the guys would write a song that would become a classic and get recorded by other artists. This was one of their very best efforts.

The Supremes: “You Can’t Hurry Love”

This song is a change of pace and shows that the guys were not locked into trying the same thing time after time. This song also became a classic recorded by others.

The Supremes: “You Keep Me Hanging On”

The Marvelettes answered "Please, Mr. Postman" with Twistin' Postman. I once saw a performance by the Marvelettes, and they led off with this tune.

By 1967, Gordy and Holland, Dozier and Holland were fighting over money. In spite of this, the guys managed to turn out four Top 10 hits for the Supremes. The first one is quite different from what had come before.

The Supremes: “Love is Here and Now You’re Gone”

This was the hippie era. This is an upbeat attempt at staying relevant, but it sounds more like white commercial pop than Motown.

The Supremes: “The Happening”

This song has some strange psychedelic effects. It’s nothing like the work that Norm Whitfield would do with the Temptations a few years later, and it sounds a bit labored, as if the guys weren’t quite sure of what they were doing.

The Supremes: “Reflections”

Not surprisingly, the guys turned to something more conventional for the girls.

The Supremes: “In and Out of Love”

In 1967, Martha & the Vandellas had their last hit, and it was Holland, Dozier and Holland that provided it. This is one of their greats, and it fits Martha Reeves’ voice like a glove.

The Primettes had been discovered by Berry Gordy, and after going through etiquette school, they were turned over to Holland, Dozier and Holland in 1963. They didn’t make the Top 10 that year, but a song by H-D-H got them on the charts.

I like the Primettes. Here's The Return of Stagger Lee by Don Revels & the Primettes (1960).
