This was the hippie era. This is an upbeat attempt at staying relevant, but it sounds more like white commercial pop than Motown.
This song has some strange psychedelic effects. Its nothing like the work that Norm Whitfield would do with the Temptations a few years later, and it sounds a bit labored, as if the guys werent quite sure of what they were doing.
Not surprisingly, the guys turned to something more conventional for the girls.
