French Socialist Francois Hollande appeared headed to victory over President Nicolas Sarkozy, according to exit polls of voters released by Swiss and Belgian news media.
Those polls showed Hollande with 52 to 53 percent of the vote in an election that turned on solutions for Europe's economic crisis amid record unemployment in France.
French voters were still headed to cast their ballots when the exit polls were released in the early evening _ the results of exit polls cannot be published in France until voting ends at 8 p.m., 2 p.m. Eastern _ but the outcome seemed all but certain.

Well, I guess Sarkozy won’t have to deal with Netanyahu any more (since he found that so distasteful).
Every socialst inclined person I know always points to Europe as an example of how it works when I say something to the effect that socialism doesn’t work.
The money is already leaving France. Writing is on the wall. Coming to a United States near you!
Well, Amerika is socialist. They might as well join us.
2 questions:
They need to win more than 50% of the vote to become president, correct? If so, François Hollande winning by 51.7% is not a tremendous margin?
Is Hollande anything like François Mitterrand was, in terms of his policies, and character?
Blech!
Up next, the elections for the legislature...
A big domino has fallen for the Left. The markets will roil; the Iranian situation will also become more precarious as France moves towards the radical Islamic position.
A weaker and unstable EU should also increase the chance for a US market decline and collapse thereby increasing the likelihood hussein’s defeat. J’espere.
Marseilles was always a hellhole.
Remember “The French Connection”?
By latest count, Hollande did not get 50% of Tge votes case, as 2% cast blank ballots. He did get 51.6% of the real votes cast- not exactly a landslide or a mandate. Very much under the 10% victory he was predicting.
Hollande, and his former girlfriend, Segolène Royal were both protégée of François Mitterrand. Hollande comes out if the socialist Marxist left, and while on the moderate part if the spectrum is still an ideologue and not a natural politician.
Mitterrand, who started out on the fascist right, (he was the aide to Pétain responsible for forcing Jews to wear the yellow Star of David) was a Machiavellian- like master politician, a megalomaniac who went with whatever positions furthered his career.
When Mitterrand saw that putting his socialist agenda in power would be impossible, he moved to the center. I don’t believe that Hollande can do that. He is too beholden to the extreme far left- Communists, Trotskyites, green etc. Not going to be pretty to watch.
Indeed. Thanks for the ping!
Thanks for that insightful, comparative analysis of Mitterand & Hollande.
I knew a fair bit about Mitterand & his track record & background, but not much at all about Hollande.
Segolène Royal is his girlfriend?! lol.. wasn’t she one of the people running against Sarko in previous election?
51.6% is definitely not a mandate. Got to remember that 48.4% didn’t vote for him. So, what does that mean for implementing his policies? Presumably, there are other ‘political processes’ that can prevent him or throw obstacles on his path, even as president, before he can implement his policies?
Yes, it’s true! Segolène Royal and François Hollande were a couple for almost thirty years. They have four children together, although they were never married.
Royal was the Socialist Party candidate who ran against Sarko In 2007. Hollande officially left her after she lost, and moved in with his new girlfriend, Valerie Trieweiller aka “the Rotweiller”. She will now be First Lady of France.
I wish I had a better explanation, but a I can say is, they’re French- they’re not like us. I might add that the fact they are Socialists and BoBos (bourgeois bohemians) and limousine liberals doesn’t help!
what can you expect from the cheese eating surrender monkeys?
They love Jerry Lewis
Well, you could start by saying thank you for your independance and your Constitution.
Ya know - just sayin.
Without the French, the War of Independance would have been a boringly damp squib and your president would be a prime minister at most.
Do you know how much it pains an Englishman to have to say something nice about the French?
Still, yeah the Jerry Lewis thing is just wierd. They love the Hoff too. A strange people.
Hollande has to face what no socialist ever wants to face - reality.
He really doesn’t have a lot of easy options. Sarko became the face of austerity. Hollande will throw some bones to pacify the mob, but the reality is that France and the EU are in very, very serious trouble - economically and demographically.
Suicide by government schooling. Why would government employees ever undermine a system they benefit from?
A century of indoctrination has worked.
Mitterrand started out on the fascist left...and move toward the center left.
Mitterrand started his career working for Pétain and the Vichy government in France. Then, after WWII was over, he switched over to the Socialists.
