Tunes For The Troops

**Artist Showcase**

Triumph is a Canadian hard rock power trio that was popular in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Eight of the band's albums were certified gold or higher, and Triumph was nominated for multiple Juno Awards, including Group of the Year Award in 1979, 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Like their fellow Canadians Rush and Saga, Triumph began building their reputation across North America as a live band, peaking in the early to mid 1980s. The band was formed by Toronto music veterans Gil Moore (drums, vocals), Mike Levine (bass, keyboards, producer), and Rik Emmett (singer, guitarist, songwriter) in 1975.

By 1978 Eddie Rabbitt was opening for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. His fourth album, “Variations”, produced two hit singles. The first teamed him with Evan Stevens and Dan Tyler as co-writers.

I should note that this video is not suitable for Ma or the kids. It’s pretty naughty. Be forewarned.

"Hearts on Fire”

This song teamed Eddie with Stevens and David Malloy, who would also become a consistent co-writer.

”I Just Want to Love You”

Up until now, Eddie Rabbitt could be considered a straight country artist. His album, “The Best of Eddie Rabbitt”, however, contained a song, not written by Eddie or his team, that came from a hit Clint Eastwood movie and crossed over to the pop charts. This was the moment that Eddie Rabbitt rang the cash register.

”Every Which Way But Loose”

In 1979 Eddie Rabbitt issued the album “Loveline” which produced two hit singles and continued his crossover status. This was the moment in Eddie Rabbitt’s career when Country morphed into Hot Country. The first song was co-written by Stevens and Malloy.

“Pour Me Another Tequila”

The second song was co-written by Stevens, Malloy and Randy McMormick. There is a definite taste of R&B in this number. He’s giving country music a big ol’ stretch. A few years earlier, this would have been recorded in Muscle Shoals, not Nashville. A lot had changed.

“Suspicions”

After six successful albums, in 1980 Eddie Rabbitt was approached by NBC to do a TV special featuring other country artists. It aired in July and got respectable ratings and reviews. Then the network approached him to do a variety show in the same tradition as Mac Davis’ old show in the mid-Seventies. Eddie had a good business head on his shoulders, and he turned it down with the comment, “It’s not worth the gamble.”

His album “Horizon” produced successful singles, and Eddie continued pushing the envelope on the country sound. This was a Stevens and Malloy co-effort with Eddie, and was inspired by Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”.

”Drivin’ My Life Away”

This song developed from a small fragment Eddie penned during a thunderstorm back in the Sixties. It was a huge crossover hit, again bringing Stevens and Malloy into the mix.

“I Love a Rainy Night”

In 1981, Eddie Rabbitt issued his “Step by Step” album and had two more hit singles co-written by Stevens and Malloy. Eddie was now firmly a crossover artist and was defining Hot Country in a way Mac Davis had never managed.
