It only took nearly six years for the media to begin vetting President Obama’s past.

Today, Vanity Fair released an excerpt from a new biography of Barack Obama by David Maraniss. The excerpt discusses Barack Obama's first love affair, with a white Australian woman named Genevieve Cook. It's a telling examination of who Obama was as a young man -- and it shows a self-absorbed "internationalist" with delusions of grandeur.

The book itself sounds like an ode to Obama. Maraniss writes, “At age 20, Obama was a man of the world … He could not be of one place, rooted and provincial.” No, says Maraniss, this was a broadminded young man who “knew the ways of different cultures better than he knew himself.”

When he first moved to New York, he was in the midst of an affair with Alexandra McNear, a girl from Occidental. They exchanged a series of purple letters with one another – turgid missives from overfevered young minds. Here, for example, is tendentious Obama explaining poetry to his young girlfriend:

At one time, it was said that Stanley Ann's school uniform, in the picture where she's sitting on the couch arm with Stanley Armor and Madelyn seated on the couch, had an insignia from a Lebanese school on it. Has this been confirmed?

(I try to keep up, but I can't recall reading if this was ever confirmed or not.)

Philip’s brother John B was married to an Olympic Tennis player who won a silver medal in Paris.

There is an obscure reference that John B was head of Treasury Department of E I Dupont after WW I...but mostly what I find on that is modern day age of JOHN P Jessup . Wonder if they are related.

What a bizarre choice for a beard for Obama. You can find all kinds of things on the family but the girl is a ghost on the net...scrubbed away...

To say that Dr. Robert Stein has an active role in the Sag Harbor community is a gross understatement.

Even before his appointment to the Sag Harbor Village Board of Trustees, Stein and his wife, Alex McNear, were vital residents in the village, hosting community events at their home. However, it was after his appointment that Stein really shone as a dedicated volunteer, easily becoming the most diverse and active member of the village board.
