We are the Free Republic Pre-War on Terror Class of Freepers.
Having been a freeper for over a decade, and having experienced both a pre 9/11 presence here and a post 9/11 presence, having experienced the Hanging Chad Wars of GW's first election, Sore Loserman and all, what stands out for you regarding the growth of Free Republic over the years.
What are your thoughts on the independence of Free Republic, and Jim Robinson's decision to go advertisement free all these years. My first thought is that his financial independence is what has freed him to tell the GOP-E to stick it in their ear this year.
If he had to worry about sponsors dropping him, or well-heeled pubbies supporting him, that might have intimidated a lesser man.
We've been blessed these many years. What stands out for you in your decades plus experience on Free Republic?
Also, I miss Registered. I have a ton of his work saved. I absolutely enjoyed the Traficant threads, too, classics.

That was the Truth Rally in Lafayette Park. Hottest day of the year.
I remember Eschoir, murrymom, ...some lady (I forgot her name) who tried to tell Jim how to run the place and then got mad and left, Deep in the Hurtgen Forest, Lucianne Goldberg’s dalliance with FreeRepublic...then she got mad and left. Then there was some prophet-like oracle guy who would pretend to have secret information about what was going to happen (I forgot his name) then he got mad and left. As you can tell, my memory is not what it used to be.
I joined early in 2000, I think. My fondest memory was the FR Inauguration Ball when George W was elected the first time. Sweet party after all the Sore-Loserman crap we had to deal with. It was snowing hard in DC that night so I decided to ride the Metro to the party instead of driving. On the subway I met up with several Texans on their way to the ball and we were all just yukking it up over Bush winning when I noticed this skinny liberal kid glaring at us the whole time, obviously because Gore lost. That was worth it!
Excellent!

Lots of memories in that list, TxN, and all combined I’ll bet they account for hundreds of thousands of posts.
Amazing what goes on here at Free Republic.
Excellent, boxlunch! Thank you for the links!
Thank you so much. I had no idea.
Staying ad free is good. But every purge has left a bad mark on the place. Political discussions here used to be fun, now they’re an echo chamber, and if you ain’t gonna echo stay off the thread. Still a good place to hang out.
April 23 2001
The mixed feelings of anger and sadness felt on the morning of September 11, 2001... Anger at the fact that we were being attacked, even though I knew it was bound to happen at some point. (A hunch also held by so many others that have noted the extreme hatred of the U.S. that is witnessed while stationed outside CONUS.) The sadness at the loss of friends in the South Tower of WTC. The sadness at the loss of fellow freeper BKO, who was on American flight 77 when it hit the Pentagon...
And now, as I type this, I sit in sadness once more... I just went down the entire memorial page (link found at the bottom of the home page) recalling the names of Freepers that have passed and the exchanges we shared. I know that they are in a better place...
Absolutely, Onyx. You are seldom around. How does your conscience allow you to deal with missing entire blocks of minutes on FR?
You need one of those boiling egg timers to alert you when 5 minutes have gone by.
LOL
I think I joined in 97 or 98, I know I almost got lynched on Nov 4, 1999 in Hartford, I posted a hugely popular thread then
but our join dates got changed once, didn’t they?
and, yes, it was ME who told someone to keep posting breaking news while I was in the shower!
Since Aug 8, 1998
