We are the Free Republic Pre-War on Terror Class of Freepers.
Having been a freeper for over a decade, and having experienced both a pre 9/11 presence here and a post 9/11 presence, having experienced the Hanging Chad Wars of GW's first election, Sore Loserman and all, what stands out for you regarding the growth of Free Republic over the years.
What are your thoughts on the independence of Free Republic, and Jim Robinson's decision to go advertisement free all these years. My first thought is that his financial independence is what has freed him to tell the GOP-E to stick it in their ear this year.
If he had to worry about sponsors dropping him, or well-heeled pubbies supporting him, that might have intimidated a lesser man.
We've been blessed these many years. What stands out for you in your decades plus experience on Free Republic?
Wow. Either she grew up real fast, or we're getting old. ;~))
2000 election was rough. In 2004 I had the jacket from Unfit for Command taped in the back window of my Massachusetts registered pickup. Used to get about 50-50 thumbs up and middle fingers. To Xzins question... I adore the lack of ads and the dependence on sponsors. I would stay if Jim decides to move to an ad based model and would certainly pay for an ad free version. I’d like it to stay the way it is, but with Freepathons taking longer every quarter, I understand the need to at least look at alternatives. j_tull 10/15/2000
See if this helps.
Yeah, we are old
WHAT?! Classy’s back?!
Yep. They say time flies when you're having fun.
Seems the older I get, the faster it seems to fly by. But I am having some difficulty remembering all the fun I have had lately. Maybe just a heart beat counts now. ;~))
Signed up I think April ‘99 but lurked from almost the beginning. First saw JR’s writings on the Prodigy Whitewater board pre-FR days. Check my profile for my history. Loved the activism here in the early days. And the research. Was cleaning out some old files recently and found the old printed pages from posters here researching the various Clinton scandals. Incredible! I agree with others who have posted that sadly the tone has become one of a circular firing squad recently. Obama (and those backing him) is worse than Clinton. He has to go.
wasn’t it the manager’s dinner where Yellow Rose’s car broke down and you saved her... or that’a the way she told it
Wow! I’m honored to be blocked. Thank you for letting me know, dear McGruff!
Been here since 12 Feb 1998. Haven’t missed too many days since. Met some of the old timers at the Oct 1998 March for Justice on the Mall in DC.
your sign up date is about when I started regular lurking.
didn’t sign up till I had been on a MS chat room with YRofT, Two Thirds Vote Aye, RAH, amom, Towanda and other fine posters for some weeks the next spring.
get over here
Wow! How the time flies! Turn around and they’re all grown up.
God bless her. You too.
It doesnt matter whether their support was luke warm or simply getting behind the obvious nominee, they werent welcome here.
Yes, this is frustrating. It feels like people are heading for the exits. The Freepathon seems to confirm this.
Meanwhile, people are calling Michelle Bachmann a whore over on another thread for endorsing Romney. Classy.
Thank you very much, dalereed. We’re determined to keep her on the straight and narrow path, but man are we ever catching the flak for it. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!!
I joined in Nov 2000 but was lurking some several years before that. I think we should not have advertising. I give a little each month. If all active freepers gave just a little we could avoid it.
I loved the long research posts - I miss those. We still have them but I don’t see them as often - maybe they are off on a hidden area or something. If any of you are in the super secret classified research group and would invite me to join I promise to just be quiet and listen! :-)
I also loved the funny threads, inside jokes etc. Laughing helps us keep our sanity in these crazy times.
I have learned so much about conservatism here. Read so many books recommended by knowledgeable freepers. I wish we could condense the knowledge here to teach our younger generation.
I thought I’d post some links to some funny, sad,and informative FR threads:

Hillary’s Lovely Legs!
I can’t imagine how I’d have gotten thru the 2000 election, and 9/11 without Free Republic. I rarely go more than a couple of days without checking headlines.
