(CBS/AP) On Monday, the new One World Trade Center is due to reach and surpass the height of the Empire State Building, to become New York City's tallest building.
Workers will be putting steel columns in place that will make the unfinished frame of the building a little more than 1,250 feet highthe level of the Empire State Building's highest observation deck.
The tower still isn't as high as the antenna that sits on the Empire State Building. (Experts usually don't count antennas or flagpoles when measuring building height.)
The "Freedom Tower" isn't expected to reach its full height for at least another year.
When complete, One World Trade will stand at 1,776 feet (which includes a 408-foot-tall antenna spire that will sit on its roof). Discounting the antenna, it will still be the second-highest building in the U.S., after the Willis Tower in Chicago.

I think it's kinda purty.
So, the Freedom Tower is going to be 1776 feet...
Is it sacrilege to add another feet to it or so? :)
Still bothers me that Dubai has a building nearly double the height of the new WTC Tower 1, but then they don't have to worry about lunatics trying to knock it down, do they?
I’m with you on that one!!
Or at least rebuild the original 2 towers. The buildings going up now don’t grab me at all. I can see the progress from this town and the only think I’m happy about it is that there is a semblance of what use to be there, but a double tower would have been best.
I favor the ESB memories over progress I guess.
Maybe they can go with the year the Constitution was passed?
Does that include the anti-aircraft weapons?
10 years later and that crap still isn’t built yet, what a farce. It should have been TWO towers rebuilt as soon as possible using round the clock labor and a missile battery put on top. Then they should have built a mosque across the street and used it to test the missile battery.
And the “Willis Tower” can lick my lint, you don’t rename a friggin landmark. It will always be the Sears Tower. At least until we’re all dead and today’s stupid kids are the adults. I wish the media weren’t a bunch a pansies without the gonads to refuse to go along with stupid corporate renaming.
Happy to declare I will never visit NYC to see it.
Ping a ling.
The Park51 so-called community center isnt totally defeated yet, speaking of that.
Then they should have built a mosque across the street
“World Trade Center tower to surpass Empire State”
.... because we didn’t have the balls to surpass anything else in the United States built in the last 90 years.
Seriously though, I figured they wouldn’t make it majestic tall because they wouldn’t be able to afford the insurance, if even available.
I drove past Manhattan last week on the Jersey Turnpike and I must say, it gave me a warm feeling to see a tower rising in that long-vacant space once again.
Is that so, well let’s all of us and all the wonderful imams get friendship bracelets and sing “Kumbaya” translated into 16th century Arabic so it sounds even worse than it does in English.
Well, it will be taller then the current tallest building in the US, the Sears Tower, and taller then the old Trade Centers.
Is that the real name?
The address, IIRC. But the wording as noted is still poignant.
