Mexican authorities have recovered around 68,000 guns that traced back to the United States in the past five years, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) said on Thursday.
“Since 2007, trace data shows a trend in recovered and submitted crime guns from Mexico shifting from pistols and revolvers to rifles,” the ATF said in a statement.
The agency added that reports from officials in Mexico show “certain types of rifles, such as the AK and AR variants with detachable magazines, are used more frequently to commit violent crime by drug trafficking organizations.”
The ATF said it was able to trace back 68,000 of more than 99,000 guns that were submitted by Mexican authorities.
Mexican officials in the past have complained that drug cartels often wind up with U.S.-sourced guns in their bloody wars against each other and the army.

At least 47,000 people have been killed in the conflict since President Felipe Calderon directed the army to act against cartels in 2006.
If the Damned border was properly sealed and BATF disbanded the problem would vanish.

I’m sure all of the Mercedes and BMWs the cartels drive down there can be traced to Germany. The issue is not “U.S.-sourced”, it’s “U.S. Government-sourced”.

I left a comment after the article that the omission of the Obama Administration intentionally selling tens of thousands of firearms to drug cartels is a derelection of journalistic integrity.

Who cares. If Mexico weren't a cesspool of corrupt police, corrupt bureaucrats, and criminals then there wouldn't be any shootings. It's criminals who commit the crimes - not guns. A fact lost on all Democrats, the Media, and many Republicans.
And 13 million illegal aliens can be traced to Mexico. Coincidentally, the solution to both problems is the same. Build a damned fence.

Good point. I’ll Give a @#$K about the guns when both the United States and Mexico give a @#$K about the insurgency of illegal aliens coming into the US.
Until then, I don’t see an issue since neither country’s leadership wants to close the border.
And a word of caution to the ATF. Don’t try to use this as a means to undermine RKBA in the US. We’re ready for that and it’ll sting a LOT for you if you try it. You won’t want to go down this path at all. The questions you’ll have to answer are some that you don’t want to go near at all.
We don’t need ATF - PERIOD. Its an anti-Seocnd Amendment Propaganda Machine.
It needs to be disbanded. We have enough Damn police here - State Police, FBI, CIA, U.S. Marshals, municipal police, County Police, Park Police, Institutional Police, TSA, etc.etc.
The Founding Fathers would be horrified at the massive police state we have allowed to be created.
I don’t know why they even try to hide it anymore. Why not just go for broke already? The suspense is killing me.
If i ever choose to move back to Canada from the states my guns will be moving with me.
