SANFORD, FL (RNN) - Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. announced Monday he would resign permanently from the city's police force, but the city commission is having none of it.
Lee said early Monday he would resign immediately and permanently, and the commission planned to discuss his severance package at 4 p.m. ET. However, the AP reported the commission voted 3-2 to reject Lee's resignation.
The majority voting in favor of the rejection cited the very public uproar over George Zimmerman's shooting and killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, 17, as the reason for their vote.
Lee resigned temporarily March 22 after the department was roundly criticized for not arresting Zimmerman.
"I'm aware that my role as the leader of this agency has become a distraction," Lee said at a press conference March 22. "It is my hope the process would move swiftly and thoroughly through the justice system."
An agenda on the City Commission's site said the group would discuss the "adoption of a resolution relating to the police department."
City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. would not confirm to the Herald that the resolution had to do with Lee.

Good for them.
Great news, justice still lives in Florida!
I wonder if they rejected his resignation so they could fire him instead... Maybe if they fire him, they won’t have to pay him a severance package.
Just a feeling, but I suspect that his severance package would be fairly big (depending on how many years he’s been there). He may be looking at the period which he has to be out of the office, and just figuring it’s not worth waiting twelve months to get his job back.
I personally think he should have simply said he was off the force until prosecutor determined what they were going to do...then come right back onto duty. You can imagine all future police chiefs in this town....the minute anyone gets shot....they need to resign....to save the community. Life just doesn’t work this way.
What a surprising move on their part. Good for them for standing up against the race baiters.
is this so they can fire him with no severance? or are they showing confidence. not sure..
Why should he resign for doing a good job. He should stand by his investigation.
Bill Lee Jr. doesn’t need to be singled out and hunted down for something he did or didn’t do. I can’t blame him for bowing out of something that has become so political.
Usually it’s the other way around, fired people get severance, quitting people get to tell everybody off.
Last I heard, Florida still doesn't have slavery for police officers, just DemoRat Plantations scattered about.
I don't blame him for refusing to work in lynch mob city.
Holder’s “peacekeepers” won’t like this.
Not if they are fired "for cause"... What raised the question in my mind is that the article says the council was meeting to discuss the chief's severance package, but instead voted to reject his resignation. There is nothing in the article to indicate whether this was supposed to be a vote of confidence, or whether they planned to get rid of him in some other, more humiliating way.
Ditto...
GOOD FOR THEM
We don’t know the whole story. He could be a pos. The people of Sanford are pissed for a reason. I haven’t done my research. But who knows..
Usually in his kind of position there’s a contract, and fired translates to “bought out” (all the pay, and go away). They’d be retarded to reject his resignation just so they can fire him later, any humiliation would land on them. “You can’t quit you’re fired” is a sitcom line, when city councils start living the sitcom life they get made fun of.
they want their scapegoat if they need it
Sanity.
Didn’t the same city commission previously voted no confidence to their chief of police?
