On Thursday, CNNs Erin Burnett spoke with David Axelrod, the communications director for President Obamas re-election campaign, about his recently-canceled plans to appear on controversial host Bill Mahers HBO program.
Burnett brought up Axelrods condemnation of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh for having called Georgetown student and activist Sandra Fluke a slut and a prostitute a condemnation that proved problematic in light of his decision to appear on Mahers show given the comedians own history of referring to women mainly, but not solely, conservative women in the public eye, like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann by derogatory names.
Burnett then asked Axelrod if Mahers recent million dollar donation to a pro-Obama Super PAC should be returned in light of his comments.
Well, first of all, let me say theres been a coarsening of our political culture. I dont think that language is appropriate, no matter who uses it. And I think whoever you are in politics, you ought to be willing to say so. I was disappointed that Governor Romney didnt stand up more forcefully when Rush Limbaugh said what he said.
But understand that these words that Maher has used in his standup act are a little bit different than not excusable in any way but different than a guy with 23 million radio listeners using his broadcast platform to malign a young woman for speaking her mind in the most inappropriate, grotesque ways.
Nor does Bill Maher play the role in the Democratic party that Rush Limbaugh plays in the Republican party, where hes really the de facto boss of the party. Everybody responds to him, which is the reason why I think Governor Romney was afraid to take him on.

These RAT pukes could spin s*** into sugar.
The only question in my mind is... do they believe their own BS, or do they all attend the same liberal upside-down-think brainwashing seminars?
“Rush Limbaugh...hes really the de facto boss of the party”
yeah, if Rush is the boss of the GOP, then how did McCain get the nomination in 2008?
Really; has he given as much as Maher did to Obama’s PAC?
nice to see he’s still on the distribution list for the talking points (he’s about the fifth high-profile Dem to make a virtually identical statement)
NO!
Remember it’s pure projection. They have created the vast leftwing conspiracy.
Maher said it is okay to call Sarah Palin a c—t or a T—t because he is a commedian. What level of disgusting profanity am I allowed as an accountant? What if I were an engineer?
They actually think that way, it’s what they’ve been taught.
It is ridiculous for the Bolsheviks to basically paint Rush as an elected official (with all the responsibility that involves for the male white Republican ones at least) while not just turning a blind eye to, but obviously engineering the attacks from the left from all quarters.
The Dems have used their “useful idiots” as attack dogs in a way that only a few like Rush seem to understand; this next election is going to be fought by everyone EXCEPT the candidates, so the right needs to be organized to counter the likes of Saturday Night Live, the evening leftist “news” and “comedy” shows (they’ve melded into one & the same with Jon Stewart & Co.), etc.
Juan McCain thought he’d be a gentleman, and Obama’s legions trashed him and Sarah Palin into oblivion; after losing to a nothing like Obama, McCain shouldn’t even be seen in public.
Can this jackass Axelrod swim backward any faster?
This reminds me of something I read . . . about an avowed leftist who went to Cuba. She toured a mental institution, and after seeing the conditions there she gushed about the patients there (political prisoners) who had been given lobotomies—noting how lucky they were to have been given COMMUNIST lobotomies. These people think that we are actually stupid enough to fall for this crap. A lobotomy is a lobotomy. An insult is an insult.
They’re getting blatant enough about their double-standard that it may start blowing up in their faces soon.
A distinction that makes no difference IS no difference.
These pukes are circling the wagons in defense of scumbag Maher.
Hey @sswholerod, I don’t give a rat’s arse as to what roll Maher plays, versus Rush plays, versus Olbermann plays, versus etc, etc, etc. Wrong is wrong is wrong, and dimocRATS are the absolute worse, most vile beings on the face of planet Earth.
Yeah, keep on spinnin, David.
A true bottom feeder.
So could Maher also use “N” word without recrimination since he is a comedian? Or is it that you can call women names but not African Americans. How does this actually work? It is hard to get clear on the rules. Why did Michael Richards (Kramer) get into trouble? It seems certain approved people can say certain approved things that others can’t say based on the whim of the left and how useful or not it is to them to allow/disallow. Got it.
