The Justice Department is objecting to a new photo ID law in Texas for voters, saying the state has failed to demonstrate that the the law is not discriminatory by design against Hispanic voters.
The department's head of the civil rights division, Tom Perez, wrote a a six-page letter to Texas' director of elections saying that Texas has not "sustained its burden" under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to show that the new law will not have a discriminatory effect on minority voters. About 11 percent of Hispanic voters reportedly lack state-issued identification.
Perez wrote that while the state says the new photo ID requirement is to "ensure electoral integrity and deter ineligible voters from voting" the state "did not include evidence of significant in-person voter impersonation not already addressed by the state's existing laws."
Perez added that the number of people lacking any personal ID or driver's license issued by the state ranges from from 603,892 to 795,955, but of that span, 29-38 percent of them are Hispanic.
"According to the state's own data, a Hispanic registered voter is at least 46.5 percent, and potentially 120.0 percent, more likely than a non-Hispanic registered voter to lack this identification," Perez wrote.

“Where does it say in the constitution that the president gets to decide which state laws are valid and which are not?”
“The Constitution of the United States [has] delegated to the Congress a power to punish treason, counterfeiting the securities and current coin of the United States, piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and offences against the laws of nations, and no other crimes whatever.”
—THOMAS JEFFERSON, THE KENTUCKY RESOLUTIONS
Guess he forgot to include the President in that.
Photo voter ID card laws definitely reduce fraud at the polls. Claiming that that blacks or Hispanics are discriminated against by such a policy is a bunch of nonsense calculated to enable the Democrats to continue their fraud schemes ad infinitum, which will inevitably result in Democrats cheating their way to election victories and thereby gaining political power unjustly.
Everybody take a breath.
Texas already has had a voter ID law in place for decades.
The new voter ID law requires a photo ID.
I think this argument that photo ID is discriminatory is just going to fall flat on its face because the previous law was already in place.
BTTT!
You even need a picture ID to double post,,, and a Birth Certificate to triple post!
8^)
I have to show an ID to even get into a gated community to do my job.
And you would not BELIEVE what I had to produce just to renew my drivers license!
Showing an ID to vote should be mandatory on the Federal level.
BULL EXCREMENT!!
You have to have a state issued ID to carry on all forms of business in this state.
Even people in nursing homes need IDs to get medicare and such.
Texas should ignore the Feds and dare those clowns to do something about it. See you in court.
Well of course silly, how else can the democats promote fraudulent voting?
FUBO, what a diklick(really he is)
Craziness
That’s because the 11% of “Hispanic Voters” aren’t here legally, dumba$$.
Obama won’t carry Texas, even with him dictating what our laws will be.
But it WILL turn a lot of U.S. and state legislative seats by allowing dead people to vote.
Right on, right on...
The Obama administration shows no hesitance in making their feelings known, in getting its point across.
WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS????
Will we see Boehner out and lambasting this decision to fight against protecting our most precious right, all simply by showing ID which Americans have to do to even buy lunch for God’s sakes?
How about McCain....he’ll be out there screaming about this silly administrative position? McCain....the guy who gave us all Campaign Reform that we all sleep well at night for the effort and time he put into such an important legislation?
They’ll be out there, the Repub Senators and Representatives, right? Surely they won’t ask us volunteers to mind the polls for suspicious voting when they aren’t even letting out a peep about it?
Surely not?
“...a Hispanic registered voter is at least 46.5 percent, and potentially 120.0 percent, more likely than a non-Hispanic registered voter to lack this identification,””
Is this due to a difference in the opportunity to obtain ID?
Can’t any group skew the outcome if they ignore the opportunity? I can use way less gas in a week if I don’t drive.
Tell the Feds to give them a photo ID when they come across the border. That way we know who to deport.
I live in CT also and have noticed that. I always have ID in hand, ready to present to the person at the table checking off voters before they ask.
In TX, it costs $16 for a state issued ID card and it’s good for 6 years. You don’t even need a social security number. Less than $3 a year for something that would allow you to vote. Too much of a burden?
I unfortunately don’t have time to read through the thread. Has there been word on the state telling them to pound sand?
