In 1963, Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote a classic tune that was beautifully constructed. During the Middle 8, the tune and harmonies for “You’ll come to me when you want to settle down” are four bars of absolute perfection.

The Chiffons: “One Fine Day”

Some other recordings:

Rita Coolidge in 1979

Carole King in 1980 (Those 4 bars really shine here.)

Aaron Neville in 1993 (A totally different interpretation.)

In 1963, Gerry Goffin and Carole King created another immortal song, and the Drifters got a chance to put their brand on it. Rudy Lewis handles lead vocals, and that’s Carole on keyboard.

The Drifters: “Up on the Roof”

Some other recordings:

Carole King in 1970

Laura Nyro in 1970

James Taylor in 1979

Neil Diamond in 1993
