Former Sen. Bob Kerrey has decided against trying to regain his Nebraska seat in the November elections, almost certainly gifting it to Republicans, RealClearPolitics reports. Incumbent Ben Nelson, considered the most conservative Democrat in the upper chamber, is retiring and Kerrey was seen as the Democrats last best chance for keeping the seat in the blue column. But after weeks of toying with the idea, Kerrey decided not to run, according to RealClearPolitics. I have chosen what I believe is best for my family and me, he said in a statement released Tuesday. Kerrey was running well behind Republicans vying for their partys nomination. A Rasmussen Reports poll released Tuesday showed him 22 points behind the favorite, state Attorney General Jon Bruning; 18 points behind former Attorney General Don Stenberg; and 12 points behind state Sen. Deb Fischer. Kerrey decided to bow out shortly after those poll results were released. A Kerrey candidacy would have forced Republicans to expend a significant amount of money and resources in Nebraska, RealClearPolitics reports. Now the GOP which had targeted Nebraska even before Nelson's retirement announcement is in better position to win a majority in the Senate, which requires a net gain of four seats. according to an article from KearneyHub at 2PM today he was still in:

Not sure if he’s in or out-—however, I might ask, are Nebraskans so stupid to vote for someone as their representative(Senator), who has lived in New York the last umpteen years? I don’t think so. Let him run. Let the Democratic campaign committee pile in the funds.
Eh, he's starting to remind me of the other liberal Democrat Kerry who served in Vietnam. No wonder people get them mixed up. "I actually changed my mind about entering the Senate race, before I decided NOT to enter it" ;-)
Could be worse. I actually feel sorry for the white liberal RAT Marion Berry in Arkansas that gets confused with the former D.C. mayor & convicted felon.
‘Cept, like Willard, Marion is the former Congressman’s middle name. His first name is Robert. I can’t fathom why he’d abandon good ole Bob for Marion.
I think that he withdrew from the race.
Yeah, bizarre he’d intentionally go by his middle name when he ran for federal office. Kinda like a guy named John Mark Foley using his middle name while seeking a U.S. Senate seat or a guy named Joe Bob Ney running for Governor using his middle name.
Everyone was against marriage in 2000.
Um anyway guys, this article is the only source for this. And now it’s not there anymore. It looks like some idiot at Newsmax (which is a shoddy crap operation) reposted the article about his initial declining of the race. Lame.
BTW the thing that made him change his mind and get in was Patty Murray (DCSC Chair”woman”) threatened to sleep with him if he didn’t.
Remember “Dallas”? Kerrey looks like creep Jeremy Wendell.
Isn’t King going to vote as a Democrat in the Sente?
He can’t be independent.
That was quick. LOL
No he won’t be independent, although yesterday he said he might caucus with the Republicans on some issues.
King is liberal, but he is not a moonbat like Pingree.
There is no longer any such thing as a “good Democrat”.
The Democrat Party has been taken over by radicals and Marxists from the top on down, and has allied themselves with the Left, the unions, and Islam to bring this country to its knees.
The Democrat Party is the party of death, abortion and the homosexual agenda.
The Democrat Party is the cause of Obamacare, and the attack on the First and Second Amendments. They are the party of the TSA, which is a direct assault of our Fourth Amendment freedoms.
The Democrat Party has as their face Obama,Reid,Pelosi,Axelrod,Emmanuel,Clinton,Jarrett, Napolitano,Holder,Pannetta,Dean, Wasserman Schultz, etc—the most radical, anti-Constitution individuals to ever hold high government and political office.
People need to be confronted with why? when they admit they are Democrats, when all of the above is true.
But if, somehow, Newsmax has outscooped everyone else and Kerrey has indeed dropped out, I think that Mr. Hasselbrook could shoot Kerrey and no jury would convict him. In fact, Kerrey better stay in the race until the end, or Hasselbrook will make him feel sorry that he was ever born. Check this out, from the article about Hasselbrook dropping out:
Hassebrook, who heads the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Neb., jumped into the race when Kerrey initially said he would not run, citing family considerations. But Kerrey reversed himself last week and filed for the Senate.
Hassebrook said after getting word of Kerrey's reconsideration that he would remain in the race no matter what, and he suggested Kerrey's integrity was at stake.
Bob Kerrey is a man of integrity, Hassebrook said at the time. He told me as recently as a few days ago that he would assist my campaign. I gave up my seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents based on his word. I do not believe he would go back on it.
But on Thursday, Hassebrook ceded the nomination to Kerrey, a former two-term senator who is considered the Democrats' best chance to hold the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Ben Nelson.
Hassebrook's decision clears Kerrey's path in the May 15 primary, but it is too late for Hassebrook to run for re-election to the regent's seat he's held for nearly 18 years.

Yeah, looks like you’re right. I saw no expected follow-up articles on Kerrey’s alleged exit and with the Politics1 report of Hassebrook’s exit and endorsement of Kerrey today, something definitely smelled fishy. Still, I cannot believe Kerrey will follow through with this race given his horrible polling numbers. At least Mondale ran a decent race as a replacement candidate in MN after Wellstone’s death. This could be on par with the Dick Snelling-Pat Leahy 1986 race in VT or the Mark Warner-Jim Gilmore 2008 VA race in a mismatch of first tier challengers. Hassebrook would, ironically, probably get a higher % of the vote given that he is lesser known and not as polarizing.
Hasselbrook has a lower floor, but also a lower ceiling than Kerrey. Kerrey *could* win, but he is far likelier to lose big.
You think so? That would be sweet. Embarrass the codger and send him back to Weststar oil.
Hasselbrook gave up his job? Poor bastard. ;D
