Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has a commanding lead among Republican presidential candidates in Texas, according to a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.
Santorum would get the votes of 45 percent of the respondents if the election were held today, according to the survey. The other three candidates in the GOP race former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas are clustered well behind. Gingrich got 18 percent, Romney received 16 percent and Paul garnered 14 percent.

Bottom line, Santorum is most credible on religious liberty, and Romney may be as bad as Obama on that score.
For the Republican party to get the evangelical vote at all (instead of a third party upstart) then a strong social conservative is required.
if it bothers you personally that I throw the rhetoric used by the nonreligious here right back at them...too bad.
See Post #162.
Now that is the type of response that is truely helpful. Ok, so Rick grows...I can buy into that. I hope he can learn quickly. I do have some big concerns but like I said I will support him if he wins the nomination. Thanks
Your Post #110 is very encouraging. I hope your Italian friends in PA who normally for for the DemocRATS but you say will vote for “anyone but Obama”.... I hope they still have that mind-set when Nov. 6 rolls around.
I think that is how I saw Santorum when I looked for someone to support or like after Cain. He’s the one left that I don’t actively dislike. But the more I learned about him and watched him, I saw that he was something unusual today in politics: genuine. And in the Republican field, he is an unapologetic conservative. Most are not. They believe the great liberal myth of us being racist sexist homophobes. They define themselves using words like “compassionate,” as if other conservatives were, of course, not. Senator Santorum is proud f his conservatism and believes its principles, once applied, will help our country economically.
Is he perfect? No. Will he chase skirts or his own legacy in the White House? No. Will he seek to be liked by libs and the media? No. Can he rise to the occasion? He has already proven he can, with his great media responses. His Rombo ad is funny as heck. He will go after Obama and is already nailing him where others aren’t. He’s taking heat now and diverting it with pleasant, mocking smiles. The CBS interview yesterday was priceless. Every word he says is being twisted by the media, but his actual quotes are beautiful. He is not even close t saying what the media says he is saying.
He is handling himself just fine, and I believe a person like him in The White House could be far better for us than a self-indulgent insecure dreamer, an active, unafraid communist, or a status quo moderate. He has the potential for greatness too.
I appreciate your thoughtful reply. But I disagree with one thing you said: “What happened back then is completely irrelevant to the upcoming election.” I think is maybe the most important thing of all. To understand a loss is too grow and develop as a leader. I do understand all you said. Can you shed more light on two things:
1) How big a role did it play that Rick moved to Virgina with his entire family while he was still representing PA? What role did it play that he used the tax money of PA citizens to educate his children while they lived out of state? What was his reason for not paying that money back when confronted, even though he earn a very high six figure income? These things will get through up in his voice by the opposition. IF I struggle with these things you might imagine what others will do with it.
You nailed it.
They will see it soon enough.
Thank you for your reply. I will consider what you are saying though at this point I disagree with a few things. The more I watch Rick the more I wonder about his broad base appeal to independants. I know, I know, I am a conservative, but I also know Independants will elect the next president. I do not believe he needs to ease off social issues one bit, but I do believe he needs to use a different tone and different words to discrib his views. Yes, the mainline press is against him, now that is a surprise for sure. LOL. I will be on his side, but I still net to vet a little more. The problem is for me, everyone gets in such a wad when you ask questions.
Thanks. Not trying to be a hater or be negative, just very concerned about the way things are going.
Oh crap, here we go again. David Dewhurst has been entrenched in Texas GOP politics for decades. He is so “Establishment”; tied in with the Bushes and Comrade Karl and the likes. If Ted Cruz in not a Conservative, why did Glen Beck have him on his radio show and say to America: “Folks, this guy is the ‘real deal’?” Also, if Ted is “establishment” and not the “real deal” Conservative, why was he chosen to MC the recent CPAC gathering in D.C. instead of David Dewhurst? One final thing......
It’s a sad friggin’ day when a person cannot express their candidate preference or non-preference without people like you going ballistic and getting nasty. I’m thinking you’re might be of the female gender, so please, go take some Midol for your PMS.
That’s one benefit of a long Primary Process; it helps candidates sand off their rough edges. Another benefit: It gets all of their baggage, dirty laundry, past gaffes and misstatements out of the way before the GE and makes them somewhat innocuous to it in the Fall campaign. And, it weeds out people who deceived us, like the philandering Herman Cain. I’d still like to know what he did with all his campaign money. I’m thinking he paid out a lot of hush money. Haven’t heard from the old broads since Herman ran and hid behind God and his wife instead of standing and fighting to prove his innocence. (Maybe, because he wasn’t innocent.)
I wonder why many on free republic don’t get that. Are they all so new to the political process that they don’t understand how important it is to ‘vet’ all the candidates and get this out of the way for the general election. I am tired of being called a hater and that I am being negative when I am simply asking questions that the candidate who wins damn well better have a good answer for. Rick scares me to death, not because I don’t like him, but because I care so darn much about who wins. This is important and I sorry if offend those who believe their candidate is without sin.
IF Rick Santorum is God's chosen vessel to bring America back to Himself, then he will win. IF God has, in essence, 'given up' on America because of our egregious sins, then Obama will win again.
I completely reject the idea that Santorum (or Gingrich) WILL LOSE.
There is a Higher Power at work here, and we should all be in prayer that we are in conformity with Him, and not give up in defeat, as you (and many other naysayers) seem to be doing.
To: dt57: I Understand what you’re saying about Santorum’s past. Things like that bother me also. But, in the final analysis, people don’t really give a crap about a lot of stuff that is important to political junkies, like us, who are home today on the computer instead of out working a job or career. (I’m off today; be back at work tomorrow.) What people care about is their job, their mortgage, their kids future, gas prices....... In 2000 most people did NOT care about GW’s DUI. In 2008 most people did not care about Obozo’s birth certificate questions, his ties to terrorists like Bill Ayers, his pastor Rev. Wright and the fact that he was educated as a child in a Muslim School in Indonesia. So, RS spent money on his kids homeschooling. Why not? Taxpayers pay for public school kids’ education. This nation is going to hell in a hand basket; we can’t worry over RS spending a few hundred bucks for homeschool text books. Most people don’t give a rat’s a** . Keep the main thing the main thing.
The more I watch Rick the more I wonder about his broad base appeal to independants.

The GOP had the same worries about Ronald Reagan in 1980. He pulled off a landslide because there was a stark difference between him and Jimmah Cahtah.
That is what the liberal media want you to think. That “independents” or “moderates” choose our president so we need to soften our ideology to attract these paragons of careful, studied political thinking.
BS.
I call these voters what they really are: apoliticals. Gd love em, they are the busy people focused on their work, their hobbies, raising kids, or even just focused on their tv shows or pot dispensaries. They don’t pay attention to politics except for the jokes on tv.
Democrats aren’t asked by the media to moderate their views. Heck, they just elected a communist sympathizer as president. But we always are asked to send a RINO to the nomination, which gets us candidate dole or McCain.
Somehow, even though apoliticals exist, when we send real conservatives up, they tend to win.
So true, thanks for the bringing this back to what is the truth. My prayer is that God’s will will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
I dont believe we need to soften anything. Still I will repeat, my concern (among others) is Rick’s broad base appeal. And I do disagree, independants will play a big role in the election. They don’t like Obama. We have to find someone that they will like more, or hate less. Is that Rick Santorum, I still have doubts.
IF Rick Santorum is God’s chosen vessel to bring America back to Himself, then he will win. IF God has, in essence, ‘given up’ on America because of our egregious sins, then Obama will win again.

Well, brother, that is a very simplistic view there. I know that God is sovereign and can do whatever He wants to do, but faith without works is dead (James 2:17, 20,26). We can’t sit back and be spectators to see what God’s going to decide on November 6. What you seem to be saying is similar to people saying: “If God wants people to be saved, they’ll be saved.” No they won’t; not unless someone gets active and shares with them the plan of salvation. (Romans 10:14). God has, through the ages, allowed man to have a part in determining mankind’s own destiny; for better or worse. And now, anyone would be better; Obama would be worse.
