I appreciate your thoughtful reply. But I disagree with one thing you said: “What happened back then is completely irrelevant to the upcoming election.” I think is maybe the most important thing of all. To understand a loss is too grow and develop as a leader. I do understand all you said. Can you shed more light on two things:

1) How big a role did it play that Rick moved to Virgina with his entire family while he was still representing PA? What role did it play that he used the tax money of PA citizens to educate his children while they lived out of state? What was his reason for not paying that money back when confronted, even though he earn a very high six figure income? These things will get through up in his voice by the opposition. IF I struggle with these things you might imagine what others will do with it.

To: dt57: I Understand what you’re saying about Santorum’s past. Things like that bother me also. But, in the final analysis, people don’t really give a crap about a lot of stuff that is important to political junkies, like us, who are home today on the computer instead of out working a job or career. (I’m off today; be back at work tomorrow.) What people care about is their job, their mortgage, their kids future, gas prices....... In 2000 most people did NOT care about GW’s DUI. In 2008 most people did not care about Obozo’s birth certificate questions, his ties to terrorists like Bill Ayers, his pastor Rev. Wright and the fact that he was educated as a child in a Muslim School in Indonesia. So, RS spent money on his kids homeschooling. Why not? Taxpayers pay for public school kids’ education. This nation is going to hell in a hand basket; we can’t worry over RS spending a few hundred bucks for homeschool text books. Most people don’t give a rat’s a** . Keep the main thing the main thing.

First off, dt57, I should make clear that none of my posts today were intended to be an attack against you personally and I fully respect your right to express your opinion. My frustration is with all the negativity I’ve been reading on the Free Republic board in general lately and I’ve been trying to challenge the “hand-wringers”, as I call them, to realize just how vulnerable Obama is to being defeated this November. I’ve been simply losing my patience with those who are touting their “realistic” prediction that Obama will be re-elected because 1) the election is 8-1/2 months away and our side hasn’t even begun to fight Obama yet, and 2) Obama has had a catastrophically horrible first term as president. I simply don’t comprehend how adopting a defeatist outlook this early in the ball game is in any way helpful or constructive to our goal. We MUST do everything in our power to defeat Obama at the ballot box this November. There is absolutely NO other alternative if we want to save the United States of America as we know it.

That said, you do bring up a valid point about Rick Santorum’s past. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t even aware until fairly recently of the flap involving his alleged use of PA tax money for his children’s education while he lived out of state. I haven’t seen a strong case made in his defense regarding these allegations and I agree that this doesn’t reflect terribly well on him. But given that our nation’s biggest enemy right now is a radical Marxist who has exploded our national debt by $5 trillion, kept unemployment above 8% for the longest period since the Great Depression, forced an oppressive and unconstitutional health care overhaul on us, and has usurped the U.S. Constitution and our individual liberties numerous times, I would argue that now is not the time to be completely fixated on ideological and ethical purity with our candidates. Unfortunately, there is no perfect candidate on our side running for office right now, but I still vehemently contend that Santorum or Gingrich, warts and all, would be 1,000 times better than Obama as president!
