The registry isnt entirely gone .... But Wednesdays vote in the House of Commons, where the bill to scrap the registry and delete its record passed third reading with two NDP MPs breaking ranks with their party to vote with the government means its all over but for the crying ....
This is a major victory for the Tories, who have been gunning for the registry (pun not intended, but acknowledged) since the day it was enacted. Some would argue its demise is a good thing for Canadians. But anyone can see that its a good thing for the Conservatives.
So its not surprising that some Tories met with some prominent anti-registry lobbyists and other registry foes after the vote for a reception. Cocktails were served. Hands were likely shaken. No doubt a back or two was patted.
How dare they!
I find this deplorable, Quebec Public Security Minister Robert Dutil said Wednesday. Frankly, they have a right to their opinion. We understand. Its their opinion. They promised it. But to go so far as to celebrate . . . is not very adequate. Lisette Lapointe, an independent member of the Quebec National Assembly, called it, really offensive and an insult to the victims of the Montreal massacre. Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois read off the names of the 14 women killed by Marc Lepine and then said, Imagine you are the parents of one of the victims. The celebration, said Marois, was shameful disgusting and revolting.
Nevermind the fact that the registry never would have stopped Lepines rampage even if it had been in place in 1989. Thats irrelevant. Just think of the families!
In Ottawa, the response was similar. Interim NDP leader Nycole Turmel called the cocktails arrogant. Bob Rae criticized the Tories ....

Man, this majority thing could be fun, and we've still got another 3-4 years to go just in this mandate!
More good news.
Oh BTW, the bill to scrap Section 13, which created the “Human Rights” (snort) Tribunals, also quietly passed second reading in Parliament earlier this week. After third reading, it’s law.
Didn’t hear about this on the CBC or in the Toronto Star? What a surprise!!
If it happens, when 0bamacare is repealed or ruled unconstitutional,
you damn right we’re going to celebrate.
PSM Robert Dutil is not very adequate.
AND, if they don’t delete it from the data backups, it will still be available for use, later...
I’d have stood there going “Hey NDP! Neener, neener, neener!!”
Just out of curiosity what exactly does the repeal of the registry mean? Does it mean you don’t have to get a license to purchase a long gun anymore or does it mean you just don’t have to register them after you get the license?
lol.
This is political warfare. The left plays for keeps. They will use every angle they can. This is how the propaganda war is played.
Hoorah Canucks! Welcome to Freedom!
Following a mass shooting in 1989, the federal Liberals created this national “firearms registry”, a database of all long-gun owners in Canada (handguns had been banned for years already). The theory was, the cops could simply check if a house had weapons inside, to better prepare for any situation.
In practise, it amounted to painting all hunters as potential murderers. The Liberals didn’t care about that, but as it turned out, a lot of those hunters were native peoples - really bad optics for a leftist party to be picking on a minority. Then there were the huge cost overruns (+1000%) - by the end, only the most hard-core were supporting it.
So the database is now to be destroyed, and guns don’t have to be registered, I think. But you still need a provincial hunting license and firearms safety course certificate.
Thanks for the info. I read up on the Canadian gun laws and was shocked to learn that you can actually purchase semi autos such as glocks etc as long as you take the extra course and pay a little more for the license.

Thanks for the ping, canuck_conservative.
"Oh BTW, the bill to scrap Section 13, which created the Human Rights (snort) Tribunals, also quietly passed second reading in Parliament earlier this week. After third reading, its law. After third reading"After third reading, it goes to the Senate. If the Senate passes it, it then goes to the Governor General for Royal Assent. Then it becomes law.
That is exactly what it means. And it’s about time. This “gun registry” has been the biggest billions of dollars boondogle that Canada has ever seen. Good riddance to this rediculous, outrageously expensive, registry which never worked anyway. Under the Lieberals, and the NDP, criminals get to keep their guns and we, the law abiding citizens, get to be treated like criminals. Bye Bye, gun registry!! CO
The Libtards would love to do that here. Thank God for the 2nd ammendment. Congratulations to Canadians.
