Santorum Catches Romney in GOP Race
Rick Santorum’s support among Tea Party Republicans and white evangelicals is surging, and he now has pulled into a virtual tie with Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. In polling conducted Feb. 8-12, 30% of Republican and Republican leaning registered voters favor Santorum while 28% favor Romney. As recently as a month ago, Romney held a 31% to 14% advantage over Santorum among all GOP voters. Santorum is now the clear favorite of Republican and GOP-leaning voters who agree with the Tea Party, as well as white evangelical Republicans. Currently, 42% of Tea Party Republican voters favor Santorum, compared with just 23% who back Romney. Santorum holds an almost identical advantage among white evangelical Republican voters (41% to 23%).
The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Feb. 8-12 among 1,501 adults, including 1172 registered voters and 552 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, finds that Barack Obama holds sizable leads over Santorum, Romney and Newt Gingrich in general election match-ups.

Oh, I agree with you... This race is far from settled and I don’t buy any of the current media narratives, especially ones that claim Mitt Romney has all but sewn up the nomination.
Out of curiosity... Since you aren’t buying into these polls, what do you think is an accurate picture of the race as it stands right now?
If Obama is leading in match-ups, that’s not good.

I'm guessing the picture is some fantasyland where Newt isn't getting hammered both in national republican polls and in head-to-head matchup with Obama polls.
There's no real meaningful person in this pot left to 'manipulate'. If you believe it, then it bears out what Santorum has done to Romney (which is closer to the truth). If you don't, then it's really either Mitt or Newt. Any way you look at this, the media doesn't know which way to turn.
My wacky theory is the poll was an honest attempt to capture the opinion of the country in the last couple of days, that is probably reasonably accurate.

This from Public Policy Polling. See what happens if Gingrich drops off:
“Rick Santorum has all the momentum in Michigan right now,” Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, said in a press release. “But it’s important to note that more than 50 percent of voters say they could change their minds in the next two weeks. There’s a lot of room for this race to shift back toward Romney in the coming days.”
“Voters were more likely to have a favorable opinion of Santorum (67 percent) than Romney (49 percent) in the PPP poll.”
“If Gingrich dropped out of the GOP presidential nomination race, his support is more likely to flow to Santorum than Romney, the poll indicates. If just Romney, Santorum and Paul were in the race, Santorum would get 48 percent (up from 39 percent if Gingrich were in) and Romney 27 (up from 24 percent).”

Those head-to-head matchup polls mean absolutely nothing right now given that the general election is still 8-1/2 months away (which is a lifetime in politics) and that our nominee (whoever it will be) hasn’t yet even begun to fight against Obama.
I am not buying this as being accurate. It is manipulation. Be careful putting your reliance in the media. Their goal is to keep control.
They can have all the control as long as Santorum is our candidate. I have no problem with them forcing Santorum on us. We should be so honored that they are forcing such a principled, moral who has such great character on us. Man if the media would force someone like Santorum on us every election, we would be in great shape.

There are some very interesting comparisons with historical data contained in this survey, and it is worth grabbing for that, I believe.
It worries me that Obama is above 50% at this time. A good thing is that Santorum polls no worse than Romney vs. Obama, though. Also, their finding of 26/32/36 GOP/Dem/Indy makes me hopeful that their survey sample is somewhat skewed even though they get roughly even numbers of Dem/lean/GOP voters in their “registered” voter sample. Also, that 26/32/36 is about the same as their 2010 numbers, which worked out just fine for the conservative candidates.
Even so, I don’t like it that he’s up.

Nearly 70 percent within the sample group—the survey of which has a margin of error of plus or minus 7 percentage points—said they do not consider Romney a “strong conservative.”
Gingrich should drop out and endorse Santorum since he's not showing he has what it takes. Then Sarah Palin, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Fred Thompson, etc. should all endorse and campaign strong for Santorum. I wish Gingrich would do the right thing, but I doubt he will. I wish Cain and Thompson would change their endorsement over to Santorum regardless, although I don't see that either unless Gingrich gets out or has a dramatic fall. It's disappointing that Palin and Bachmann won't strongly endorse him, and then start campaigning for him hard. If all those guys would have gotten behind the last Conservative left with not only an endorsement, but with active campaigning with him, and helping him raise the money he will need then I think he could win easily.
Palin seemed too sacred to make a long shot endorsement only to now have Gingrich stalling and Santorum rising. It makes since considering the choices us TEA party members are left with. Bachmann really hurt her image by looking like she was just looking for the VP spot to balance out a liberal card. Cain disappointed everyone by asking for donations, and promising not to give in to the liberal media literally until the day before he dropped out. Then it was known he would endorse Gingrich, or no one.
Santorum is the only Conservative left, and he's doing better than Gingrich. People need to switch over to him and be honest about it. If they didn't think he could win they can admit that, and explain they are supporting him now because they feel he can. If we could ever get Conservatives behind a Conservative it would really help out. Endorsements may not mean a lot by themselves, but when they get out there and campaign for them they can bring in a lot of money and positive attention that makes the difference.
