White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew on Sunday defended President Barack Obamas decision to relax a requirement that religious employers cover contraception in health plans, saying the president struck an appropriate balance and wasnt open to further compromise.
I have to say that the solution that we came up with puts no religious institution in a position where it either has to pay for or facilitate the provision of benefits they find objectionable, Mr. Lew said on CNNs State of the Union with Candy Crowley.
Mr. Lew said the president put out a solid plan, and when asked whether there is more room for compromising said, No. This is our plan.
In an appearance on CBSs Face the Nation, Mr. Lew said, Were going to go ahead and implement it. He said the White House has broad consensus not universal consensus that this is an approach thats right.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said Friday it wanted the entire birth-control mandate rescinded. The only complete solution to this religious liberty problem is for [Health and Human Services] to rescind the mandate of these objectionable services, the bishops said in a statement issued late Friday.
We note that todays proposal continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions, and to threaten government coercion of religious people and groups to violate their most deeply held convictions, the bishops said, while also urging Catholics to write to their representatives in opposition to the policy.
A long fight could damage the presidents support among Catholics who favored him in the last presidential election.

I don't understand why he's picking on Catholics...
I’m sorry....did I miss something? What was the first “compromise”?
American people: screw you, barack obama.
I hear that Muslims got an exemption on this. But the Catholics can go pound sand????
A long fight could damage the presidents support among Catholics who favored him in the last presidential election.Yes, I hope this is the case, but I also thought that ObamaCare would turn most Republicans against Willard "free abortions for all" Romney, yet he's still competitive for reasons beyond my ken to explain.
He's a pro at it in fact.
Your final answer Obama? .... Game On !!!!
The Church should drag his sorry butt to Court. Who knows? Maybe between the Church, some if the states and other parties, we could get this law declared unconstitutional once and for all. I have no confidence Congress will repeal.
I say it is past time to start ex-communicating all Catholics who backed obama on this. It will be a way the Church could and should show how serious they are about this issue, starting with Pelosi.

Yep. It was all a lie:

The House should pass a bill to prevent this...and we’ll see how all those ‘on the fence’ dems in the Senate react...it could be ready for the next president to sign.
If one republican would stand up and point out the obvious; the birth control pills is not a HEALTH CARE issue and therefore should not be covered by HEALTH insurance, Obama and his media would be painted into a corner.
I guess Obama has given up on having news conferences soon.
The muslims haven’t got an exemption....yet. They may not...as they have historically not raised the same gambling objections to SSI, car insurance, or home insurance. We shall see...but the idea that any president can wave his magic wand and decide on such things is what scares me.
But the pregnancy leads to a birth and another covered person for the insurance company, therefore the insurance company gets to collect more money. So, is this statement really true. Don't insurance companies make more when they cover more people?
I do believe he is on a path to the lowest popular vote for any incumbent President in history.

Agree. Why is it so hard for them to speak in plain English and say the obvious?
You know where there is going don’t you....two children per family and use the rejected fetal cells to grow organs for the Federal Organ Factory.
You obviously don’t CAIR.
