Al Cardenas, head of the American Conservative Union, has said that Republican turmoil might lead to a brokered convention in which Jeb Bush, former Florida governor, would emerge as a possible alternative party nominee.
Mr Cardenas, who is running this years Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a gathering in Washington of some 10,000 conservatives, told MailOnline that it was not certain that one of the four current Republican candidates would emerge victorious.
His comments came as Republicans fretted publicly about the perceived weaknesses of Mitt Romney, the establishment choice and frontrunner, Rick Santorum, surprise winner in three states on Tuesday, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.
Jeb Bush, former Florida governor and younger brother of President George W. Bush, has repeatedly said he will not run in 2012. He is one of a number of senior figures who disappointed activists and party officials alike by staying on the sidelines.
We'll know more in the next few weeks, said Mr Cardenas. The pressures already been on Mitt Romney to close the sale... and he hasnt. A split verdict on Super Tuesday on March 6th, when 10 states vote, could lead to a surprise at the Republican convention in Tampa in August, he suggested.

I can only assume the people suggesting this, have been sniffing glue.
Has it officially changed its name to RINOPAC?
It already has gone to the dark and fabulous side.
So you are voting for Urkel. Even Ron Paul is preferable to the Commie Crook Usurper.
Total lunacy if that happens.
The mess we're in was started by one RINO Bush and now we have a bumbling jive turkey mucking things up even worse and some idiots are bringing in a Bush a third time?
Who in the F _ _ _ is running this country or shouldn't I even ask?
No More Bushes - No More Bushes - No More Bushes!!!
I think I could stomach Hillary a lot better than another BUSH!!!
You can always send him one of these.
Boy I really must not say anything about the Boogeyman I wouldn’t want to be responsible for your demise.
We are North Korea!
Where’s that “Oh jeez...” gif?
Another BUSH???
Why not go whole hog and nominate “Bill the Cat”?
If Obama has any fantasies at all (that do not feature himself and his clone), it’s running against another Bush.
I can’t think of any worse idea.
As if the Republican party hasn’t become some kind of sick joke already. This would do it.
This should dispel once and for all that the E-Pubs are Conservative.
I am almost positive this is the plan all along. Nothing else seems to be make any sense at all.
I know that some are hoping for a brokered convention, but I don’t think that will help our chances in November.
I think that a brokered convention would perhaps simply reweave the current divisions within the Party, with the Northeastern establishment types pushing for a Mitch Daniels or a Chris Christie (after temporarily floating an even worse trial balloon, such as George Pataki), while the conservative wing would opt for someone like Mike Pence or Jim DeMint.
I think that it would be better if we just decided things now in the normal primary process.
In the meantime, I’m still strongly supporting Rick Santorum.
Does anyone know if this has happened before? Not so much with Bush but choosing a candidate via a brokered convention.
I am part of the conservative base, if the GOP screws with me, I will watch them screw themselves.
What about Allan West, or Mario Rubio, or Sarah Palin?
Jeb's got immigration issues to resolve....among other things.
Forget it.
No.
Willie Mittys mouth is his own worse enemy..
