NEW YORK The nations leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.
Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

Were kind of reeling, said Patrick Hurd, who is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia recipient of a 2010 grant from Komen and whose wife, Betsi, is a veteran of several Komen fundraising races and is currently battling breast cancer.

Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the cutoff results from the charitys newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. According to Komen, this applies to Planned Parenthood because its the focus of an inquiry launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., seeking to determine whether public money was improperly spent on abortions.

FRC Commends Susan G. Komen Foundation for Halting Grants to Largest Abortion Provider
January 31, 2012
Washington , D.C. - Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced that the foundation will not partner with Planned Parenthood affiliates in part because of a new policy against funding organizations under investigation.
Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider, performing nearly 330,000 abortions in fiscal year 2010, while only making 841 adoption referrals during that time. Planned Parenthood has received hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for breast cancer prevention from Susan G. Komen. However, over the past year it became known that Planned Parenthood clinics do not perform mammograms but instead only perform manual breast exams. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has said that manual breast exams are not proven effective in screening for breast cancer; mammograms are needed.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins had the following to say:
“We applaud Susan G. Komen for the Cure for putting women’s health first rather than fund the nation’s largest abortion provider. For too long many people of good will gave money to this foundation to help stop the scourge of breast cancer, not realizing that their money was going to help subsidize the nation’s largest abortion provider.
“Planned Parenthood’s abortion numbers have increased each year, now at nearly 330,000, despite the fact that the nation’s abortion rate has been dropping. Planned Parenthood has claimed they provide mammogram services for women but recently admitted they do not. Susan G. Komen is right to be concerned about the investigations of Planned Parenthood. The abortion organization has been exposed for covering up statutory rape cases and has a history of Medicaid over-billing and other financial misconduct.
“Susan G. Komen’s decision to stop funding the abortion industry is good news for women seeking help dealing with breast cancer. This is also good news for the lives of many unborn babies. Congress should also act accordingly given that Planned Parenthood receives over $487 million annually in state and federal funds. If Susan G. Komen can chose to stop subsidizing the abortion giant, surely Congress can redirect its resources to those helping women, not making a profit off the lives of unborn children,” concluded Perkins
“...Were kind of reeling, said Patrick Hurd, who is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia ...”
...and somewhere in Southeastern Virginia, a couple of unborn babies are smiling at the thought of slipping through the Baby Murder Machine’s clutches...
“Listen to them squeal...”
Yeah, they’re squealing because a few babies may have escaped...somewhere, a couple of human beings get a chance to be born.
And the lefties hate the thought of it.
the Komen organization has more troubles than this little debate. Apparently they sue other organizations which do walking fundraisers which are too close to their identity turf. There is also the issue of fundraising to have more fundraising.
I doubt like hell that Komen will cut the donations to Planned Parenthood. They’re just going to LAUNDER them better is all.
My facebook news stream is filled with women railing over this and not donating ever again to Komen. (I have my own reasons for not appreciating Komen OR their traditional oncology, different discussion.)
But how can I respond? I want facts about how much PP actually did for breast cancer, how many poor women go in to PP for ONLY breast checks and mammograms, or are these things checked only while they are in there for birth control or abortions??
ANyone have some strong facts to counteract this “turning poor people away from their only source of cancer prevention” that is going on on FB????
Still won’t give to them.
Don’t trust them to turn around and give more to PP later.
Komen did for years but they couldn’t get away with it any more. The anti-abortion people did a good job here. I have my doubts about how long it will last. I think Komen will get right back with PP as soon as the heat cools off. But it does show people that when you have enough steam behind you, you can accomplish some good.
Absolutely.
I’ve never understood this partnership as I have always heard of buried studies that link breast cancer with abortions and miscarriages.
Komen is getting slammed on their Facebook page with some nasty comments from pro-abortion ghouls.
The Colorado Komen outfit is NOT going to participate in defunding PP. On the news this AM.
So these whores that are screaming loudest that “the Right doesn’t care about women getting breast cancer” are going to drop their support of an organization that is still trying to find a cure?!?
Thermography!
There’ s the TICKET!
This is another of why it should be illegal for a non profit to fund another non profit:
“Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the cutoff results from the charitys newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. According to Komen, this applies to Planned Parenthood because its the focus of an inquiry launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., seeking to determine whether public money was improperly spent on abortions.”
Maybe Newt could make this a new executive order next January in banning non profits from funding other non profits and political entities.
PP has been cited several times for getting govt money it was not entitled to. In one sleazy Cali deal-—it bought cheap birth control and resold it to the govt at exorbitant prices.
Good point about n/p-to-n/p being illegal.
They are absolutley vicious.
Shouldn’t the name of this bunch be “Planned Non-Parenthood”?? Can’t remember them showing pics of happy families that result from their “planning”.
