A Virginia man claimed to be a Navy SEAL to talk his way out of a gun possession arrest on Thursday, and the New York Police Department committed him to a psych ward thinking his claims of elite military status were the rantings of a lunatic.NYC Police Throw Navy SEAL Into Psych Ward For Claiming... Hes a SEAL
Turns out the guy was in fact an elite Navy SEAL.
But as the New York Post put it, telling the NYPD Im in an elite military unit, you cant arrest me, doesnt help much when the citys draconian gun laws are at issue.
Twenty-nine-year-old Shaun Day was on a leave from his duty as a Navy SEAL duty when cops nailed him for running a red light in Manhattan, New York on Thursday.
NYPD officers searched Days pickup truck and found a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and three magazines full of ammo.
During the arrest, police claim

Even while on leave you carry your DOD ID Card which include your rank and branch of service.
The NY Police had this document in their hands - why else did Navy Medicos show to interview him so quickly?
As for telling the arresting team he is a SEAL - it was their own safety. SERE training, at any level, is a real b**ch and it gives you reflexes that are dangerous to others. Me thinks the arresting team up and including their Captain need to speed some time at Coronado getting acquainted with what it takes to be a SEAL. Say BUDS and hell week?
Damned shame.
New York is a swell place-—to stay away from.
Other than great Deli’s there isn’t much reason to go there.
He could do 100 push ups, and then proceed to give the NYDP a water boarding demonstration.
NYC is a foreign dictatorship. Never never never go there except for business.
New York is for idiots...... stay away.
No one asked the oblivious question; Who gets a ticket for going thru a red light in NYC?
Reminds me of comedian (cant remember who) who was comparing driving in NY to driving in LA.
In New York City you can drive thru red lights, drinking a beer, smoking a joint, headlights off and your seat belt hanging out the door throwing sparks off the pavement and you will never get pulled over.
My 1st day in LA I was pulled over because my left rear speaker was out.
Average cop wouldn’t even be given a blank application form to fill out.
Forget about a week of reality. They wouldn’t pass aphone interview.
Good post. I’m thinking that now that the SEAL has had a trip to Bellevue, and the Navy says he’s going to be treated for PTSD, does that mean he can no longer possess a gun?
His being a US Air Force Ranger SEAL in Force Recon from the Spanish-American War is irrelevant.
He may have showed his permit to carry with his drivers license. I have my permit with my license in my wallet, whether I am carrying or not (usually it is just transporting to and from the range. Police around here are completely different than those in NY. It is very common to carry here, or to go between home and the range, or to hunt. The reason I would show my permit with my drivers license is that it is possible for the police to get that info prior to approaching my car. I want to be complete above board and demonstrate to the police that I am not a threat to them beyond roll-stopping a stop sign every once in a while.
I know someone who just got a $50 ticket for putting her purse on the seat next to her on the subway, at 2:00 AM. Apparantly they have a law about that.
Maybe the cop asked if he had any weapons in the vehicle and he said yes.
The weapons question is asked by many officers to intimidate.
Are you nuts? Have you been to SERE? This guy was showboating.
You would think with all of the crimes being committed in New York , police would have something better to do than harass citizens.
“Since when are members of the military exempt from following the laws of these United States?”
The UCMJ gives certain exemptions especially when dealing with firearms.
Id like to see a little more detailed reporting on how the NYC cops made the leap from pulling him over for running a red light (a relatively minor traffic infraction usually resulting in a traffic ticket) to searching his vehicle.
Now that I think about it, in most states you are required to tell the officer that you have a weapon. In NYC, that admission will get you a search, and maybe a complimentary rough up.
I AGREE!!
We could use some Scott Coleman types here and there.
Is it just me or did some very stupid NYC cops just make themselves a very dangerous enemy? Revenge is a dish best served cold.
