A Virginia man claimed to be a Navy SEAL to talk his way out of a gun possession arrest on Thursday, and the New York Police Department committed him to a psych ward thinking his claims of elite military status were the rantings of a lunatic.NYC Police Throw Navy SEAL Into Psych Ward For Claiming... Hes a SEAL
Turns out the guy was in fact an elite Navy SEAL.
But as the New York Post put it, telling the NYPD Im in an elite military unit, you cant arrest me, doesnt help much when the citys draconian gun laws are at issue.
Twenty-nine-year-old Shaun Day was on a leave from his duty as a Navy SEAL duty when cops nailed him for running a red light in Manhattan, New York on Thursday.
NYPD officers searched Days pickup truck and found a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and three magazines full of ammo.
During the arrest, police claim

Why are they searching his car for running a red light?
My first thought, too. I thought they needed a cause to search.
—Why are they searching his car for running a red light?—
My thoughts exactly. It’s the first thing that hit my mind, actually. There is more to this story.
I get pulled over by cops several times a year and get cited about once every 18 months. I’ve never had my car searched. Ever.
Just after 9-11 he would have been given a police escort to wherever he was headed. Running a red light ... the nerve.
Your map indicates you’ve never been to the People’s Republic of New York....
That would explain a lot!
Military members are exempt from firearms laws when they are ordered to carry. Local yokels need to mind their place.
If this guy is INDEED and US Navy SEAL then an overnight in a NYC lockup should be just a walk in the park. He could EVEN call it “training”!
He shouldn't be arrested for carrying a pistol in Noo Yawk $#!++y ... because the Sullivan Act is blatantly unconstitutional.
His being a US Air Force Ranger SEAL in Force Recon from the Spanish-American War is irrelevant.
Why on earth would anyone want to visit NYC? I mean it’d be like going to San Francisco.
Maybe he was a dead rabbit and as well as a SEAL ...
I’ve seen NYC flying out of Newark. That’s as close as I ever want to get, though I suspect there are nice places in upstate NY.
And since I never need to go to Parsippany again, I’ll probably never see New Jersey again either. I hope.
Shaun Day, 29, was on a two-week leave when cops harpooned him for running a red light at 12:30 a.m. at Second Avenue and East 26th Street. When cops searched his pickup truck, they discovered a 9mm semiautomatic and three ammunition clips. During the arrest, Day was rambling incoherently and harped that he was a SEAL but had no proof for cops.He claimed he was an elite commando with top- secret clearance, cops said.

—I’d like to see a little more detailed reporting on how the NYC cops made the leap from pulling him over for running a red light (a relatively minor traffic infraction usually resulting in a traffic ticket) to searching his vehicle.—
Now that I think about it, in most states you are required to tell the officer that you have a weapon. In NYC, that admission will get you a search, and maybe a complimentary “rough up”.
;o)
Damned shame.
New York is a swell place-—to stay away from.
Other than great Deli’s there isn’t much reason to go there.
Client: "Doc, uh, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken."
Doctor: "Well, why don't you turn him in?"
Client: "I would, but I need the eggs."
