It's 0930 EST and there's nothing in the sidebar that looks like a live thread for the SC primary . . .
Rubio could swing FLa. for Newt by endorsing him but I doubt that’s in the cards. Marco is already Presidential, hopeful he will make a run at it one day.
You actually give a better explanation of Bain and just how predatory it was than the candidates. If you could redo that post I saw a few days ago, frequently, it would go along way to explain to others just how Bain borrowed money in small companies name, looted the money inthe form of dividends and then watched them struggle to pay it back many going broke in the process. Great job once again.
If Santorum loses as badly in Florida as he did in SC, the only thing keeping him in would be a subsidy from Mitt to keep him in so as to split the conservative vote. Mitt is unpopular among conservatives.
All Newt needs is for Santorum's social conservative base to decide that Newt may not be perfect, but he's the most conservative guy able to beat Obama. At that point Mitt is finished.
Wow huge comment just now from Charles Bierbauer on C-Spam almost 25% of voter yesterday in SC were indys and they went for Newt!! That huge when you think about it.
I had the pleasure of meeting Marco in Sept. Shook his hand got a photo the whole bit.
I doubt he will entertain running for potus for a while. He wants experience as a US senator he has made that pretty clear numerous times.
HE is a charismatic speaker and his counter Sarah,if the two are ever together on the same stage the electricity generated could power a million homes.
I'm confused. CBS says SC has 25 delegates, and Newt won 17. What's the story with the last 8 delegates?
That's what's selling me on Newt. When asked by a gay activist about the gay vote, Newt said that gay voters who were concerned about the economy and national security should vote for him. When the guy persisted about what about gay voters who thought that gay marriage was the most important issue, Newt without hesitation said they should vote for Obama.
Newt's attitude, correctly, was "I'm not going to alienate my base in order to pander to your issue".
I would like to see that. Rand is libertarian, but not as extreme as his dad. Having Rand run would eliminate any chance of a Ron Paul Libertarian Party siphoning crucial votes away.
I probably should have used “suspicion” instead of “evidence”. it seems to have been pretty well known late ‘90s/early ‘00s. Clinton body and so forth. I believe the total topped 100 with Iris Chang. “Don” Clinton.
Less than 10% have already voted.
Florida early voting started yesterday statewide:
According to the Florida GOP, more than 185,000 Republicans have already cast their votes via absentee ballot. And around 12,000 more Republicans have participated in early voting in the five counties where polling opened last week. (Those counties are not subject to a new law shortening the number of early voting days across the state. There are 67 counties total in Florida.)Given those numbers, party officials are speculating that 2012 could mark a record year for participation in the country's first closed primary. About 1.9 million Republicans voted in the contest in 2008. There are about 4.1 million registered Republican voters statewide.
Being here, where our big 4 accountancy firms practice a form of vulture capitalism that makes Bain look like the church giving alms, I can agree.
(They audit a company, send it into receivership - we don’t have a chapter 11 provision - then strip it bare with fees while winding it up).
It was a strong and effective attack, and pressure should be kept up on Romney to disclose his tax returns. The Cayman Islands thing is going to sink him far worse than attacks that can be (and will be) characterised as left wing and anti capitalist. (I had that exact comment made to me on a thread I posted this morning)
But, time to change tack for Newt now and hit Romney on Romneycare. That has run long enough to actually have measurable costs associated with it, and is a good warm up for slapping the dems hard. Newt is more than capable of sticking it to Romney while cutting Obama at the same time!
Maybe give him a good belt on 2nd ammendment too, though I’d do that more for the primaries in the more rural states. It won’t fly in the cities - you know how polarizing guns are there, and with some cities I really don’t blame people.
Abortion, well, Newt may have a small problem as it is a moral issue and he has a little perceived problem with morality. Thanks to the tireless work of posters on here, we know the truth - but the average voter does not and, unless the MSM does the unthinkable and tells the truth, will not.
Newt still makes me slightly nervous, I admit. Unless I missed a ping his stance on foreign policy, which is the biggie that affects me, is largely unknown. He will make a strong president for the USA. That I firmly believe now. Just, no country exists in a vacuum any more, and we are kind of curious as to what we can expect.
The "prize" is going to the highest bidder. They are buying the top seat in DC these days and it ain't pretty.
Right now Obama has the most money, that is a fact.
If the people do not get completely behind one candidate and flood him with money right now, Obama will win. Unfair, wrong, despicable...you bet..but reality.
We, the people, need to pick one guy..now, before Florida or forever hold your peace. If it goes to convention..the evil foreign wallets will come out from every rat hole on the planet all at once and the professional financiers will be ready with their ready made banks and promotional markets to collect...and we know who has those connections...slippery Romney.
The fact that Willard repeatedly said he “left” Bain in 1999 and then we find out that he is still making over fifteen and a half million dollars per year (it all depends on what left means) just reinforces this concept.
He should have been upfront and honest. I'm wealthy, getting wealthier, because of my initial investment. Good for him, no problem.
As far as the “vulture” capitalism goes, don't think he can explain it away. the American people know the difference and know it is NOT the American way of capitalism: it is a manipulation. (Too many business degree and CPAs out there) It may not matter in a good economy, but when a person manipulates to earn more when his fellow citizens are hurting it matters.
Obama also has the advantage of being incumbent. Not having to pre-campaign and having the actual power is a giantic asset that should not be overlooked. If he does do what various rumors have been saying and shed Biden for Hillary, it is going to turn into one huge and nasty fight.
I know Hillary is not exactly popular around here, but she is smart and very capable, and Bill C is no slouch at motivating the base either. I’ll not lose a war by believing the propaganda that Dems are dumb. If they were dumb, they could not be so effective.
I totally agree about gathering around one candidate - not just with money but with feet on the street, manning the phones and doing the thousand thankless tasks it takes to get a person elected.
It seems to be Newt.
I am not going to disrespect Santorum supporters by saying bail and support Newt - it is obvious from my posts that Newt is second string for me after Perry, and everyone has the right to be attached to their choice of candidate. Yet I will do whatever I can. Have already offered my small services to Newt’s campaign, as I am forbidden from donating.
Looking at it rationally, I think Santorum can stick in at least until Florida, though beyond, if he loses badly in Fl, would be a tactical error.
Yes, he is going to attack Newt. He has no chance at all of picking up much of Romney’s or Paul’s support, so he has to hit the person he is closest to.
Like the Bain attacks on Romney, any attack Santorum does on Newt will have to be the same sort of attack the Dems will pull in the election. It might be helpful to Newt for stuff to be “old news” by September/October.
Just spitballing some thoughts!
“I would like to see that. Rand is libertarian, but not as extreme as his dad. Having Rand run would eliminate any chance of a Ron Paul Libertarian Party siphoning crucial votes away.”
Or the chance of his support voting for Obama again, like they did in 2008.
We need Kasich here in Ohio. Although I agree he’d be a great Veep~
Alan West also comes to mind. It’ll be interesting who gets the Veep pick.
“BUT he does that in his everyday conversation, never did it legislatively”
That is exactly right. Look at what Newt has actually done. Legislatively it is very Conservative. A lot of people miss your point including Glenn Beck who has cherry picked what Newt has said over the many years and twisted it to support his views. Glenn is going to go down in flames if he has not already.
“What’s the story with the last 8 delegates?”
I think I read you also get two delegates for each county won. So Mitt must be ahead in 4 counties. That might change with the final results.
“Delegate count has been updated. NY Times has Newt now having 23 of the 25 delegates (2 still unallocated), putting him in the lead on delegates versus Mitt’s “
Thank You. That is excellent new and makes my day. GO NEWT GO!
