On the contrary, I'm not the one looking for a halo.

Rather, it's the purists among conservatives who wouldn't go for a Daniels, Barbour or (Heaven forbid) a Jeb Bush because they were considered "Rinos".

Now we have Gingrich who the conservatives are going ga-ga over despite his stance on global warming, health mandates, boosting of immigration, tinkering with federal programs and his consideration of the Ryan plan as "social engineering". Not to mention his sordid womanizing which is the topic of this thread...(and BTW to expect a stable marital relationship is not expecting a "halo"...just normal behavior). But the man can SPEAK!/sarc

Quite hypocritical to say the least.

I don't think you get it. It's not about the smile, looks or athletics. It's about the POSITIONS Newt has taken.

He's a great talker, but he's not dependable. He's a waffle. I loved Newt back in the 90's...loved him. But he's proved himself flaky since then. Too many people on both left and right get sucked in by a good speaker. Not me. I watch the actions. The actions are what marks a good executive. Newt's actions and positions have disappointed. Why would I trust him now? Because he's promising again? Nope. Ain't going for it.

  You are correct...so many on here just love to turn on their own. They go thru favorites like water...Alan Keyes, Fred Thompson, Michael Steele (yes, believe it or not he was loved on this forum at one time), Michelle Bachman. The current "favorite" is Newt but he will also be disliked before too long.

  Fickle.

  As for the Bushes...you are right. They are quality people and we would be in an extremely dark period had George W. not been Pres. on 9/11. How easily people forget.

  Newt's 2nd wife said in an interview that while Newt is loveable, his main motivation in life is to "be somebody".

  The 2nd wife wasn't useful enough to Newt to get him where he wants to go, so he married Callista.

  Gingrich is primarily power-hungry...his core values vary from day to day.

  I would vote for Newt vs. Obama, and would hope that something could be accomplished under him with a GOP House and Senate, but I wish there were better choices in the running.

  My first choice would have been Haley Barbour. But he apparently was too "RINO" for the Tea Party crowd. I knew that the hyper-enthusiasm for Bachman, Cain, and Perry on the right would wane...and so it has.

  With due respect, a flub over John Wayne is very different than a major policy position like global warming.

  Newt has flipped and flopped and has a checkered personal life. I sometimes like to hear him speak, yet I'm tired of people who go absolutely ga-ga over good speakers (Alan Keyes, Obama, Clinton, Newt and Bachman herself, etc.) and don't weigh actions.

  Even though I prefer Newt to Romney, Newt's past actions are most definitely questionable.

  Watch what they do, not what they say. Ginrich is a good speechmaker but his character is weak.

  Does anyone remember why Gingrich had to quit as Speaker...because he was having an affir just as Clinton was. This is not a good history.

  The perfect is the enemy of the good: Santorum isn't gaining any particular traction outside of Iowa (look up how Pat Robertson did in Iowa and Minnesota in, what was it, 1988?); just as Bachmann and Perry didn't get traction.

  We are beginning to see a generational shift and split in the mores of the country as the secular progressivism combined with the destruction of marriage among non-Christians takes hold (not to mention social media and hand-held electronic communication).

  We will have to fight a holding action politically while we re-capture hearts and minds; unless we can get a charismatic leader like Palin: who did not fail for lack of enthusiasm on her part, nor for lack of support from the base, but from having to fight a two-front war against the RINOs (Newt NOT included) and the left.

  Nominating someone with neither prospects NOR charisma is not a pyrrhic victory, but a pyrrhic defeat: witness the circumstance that the RINOs have tried to blame McCain's epic fail on Palin, when in fact she is the only reason the election was not a total Obaama landslide.
