Newt: Palin comments are 'signal' to conservatives to vote for me
The Politico ^ | January 17, 2012 | Maggie Haberman

POLITICO's Ginger Gibson caught up with an elated Newt Gingrich shortly after Sarah Palin's not-quite-but-sorta endorsement on Fox News:

"We're thrilled - I just talked to Todd and we're just thrilled," he told POLITICO as he headed into his hotel here for the night. "It's a signal to every conservative that the one conservative vote that's effective is to Newt Gingrich and that's very helpful."

Palin's expression of support, Gingrich said, is part of a rush of support he believes will power him to victory on Saturday - and from there, into the candidate who will beat Mitt Romney to the GOP nomiantion.

"Lots of different things are working together to help us," Gingrich said.....

I don’t know that it’s an endorsement of Newt excepting in SC. She qualified her statement specifically.

Could be that she wants Romney to lose momentum in SC to thwart his advancement to the nomination. Could be she’ll endorse someone else after SC.

yeah we heard...I also watched her face. When Hannity asked her about the debates she rattled off in this order Perry then Santorum...then her eyes lit up when she talked about Newt.

No one expects her to bow out. The show is getting good. WE nned a long campaign that in the end will unite everyone to beat Obama. She understnad that ntto, and even said things about Paul to agree with. His domestic ideas are spot on.

But this is as close to an endorsement than getting one actually.

GREAT GREAT

You mean as how the comments about Santorum endorsing Spector is getting old ? ....

Right. We should be talking about Santorum voting to expand the Department of Education and Medicare with a new prescription drug program.

Gingrich never voted for global warming or Fannie/Freddie, he just made money from them.

When Gingrich was in office, he kept his word, better than Santorum or anyone else running.

I really don’t believe endorsements work. In fact some endorsements can create a negative affect on a candidate. Be careful what you wish for!

Did you notice that Sarah said weeks ago that the next 2 people that should go were Bachmann and Huntsman?

So now she's a psychic?

I don't think it's our last chance to stop Mitt, nor do I think Perry and Santorum should drop out yet. I do think Newt is (probably) our best chance both to avoid a big government RINO like Romney and to avoid four more years of Obama, but I want Newt to prove it. If Perry and Santorum do poorly in SC, then the weaker of the two should drop out, perhaps both if they both do very poorly. In any case, the weakest two of the non-Romneys should drop after Florida. I'm not in love with Newt by any means, but my inclination is that he's the best of the options in the race.

I see what you did there. ;-)

And Newt couldn't even get on the ballot in his home state, this time....

I listened to her on Hannity, I believe, and it was clear that she thought Newt won that debate. On the strength of that, she thought that South Carolina should vote for Newt SO THAT this contest against Romney would continue forward.

Her logic was that a split vote in South Carolina would make Romney inevitable, but that South Carolina had to combine in this primary to make sure the primary continued.

She believed, apparently, that Santorum and Perry could pick up again in some other state IF THE CONTEST CONTINUED.

If it didn’t continue, if South Carolina were used to crown Romney, then no matter who else anyone supported, it wouldn’t matter. The game would be over.

I like her logic. Newt is the conservative leading in the poll right now in S Carolina. Therefore, TO KEEP THE PRIMARY GOING FORWARD, S Carolina had to put their strength behind one candidate.

Otherwise it would be over.

Palin’s strategy is sound. Whoever else you might support for the nomination, if Romney wins South Carolina, then the money will dry up for every other candidate because Romney will then seem inevitable.

If anyone has a South Carolina ping list, then they need to understand Palin’s rationale.

Can Newt please stop using the 3rd person. Please. Show some humility and modesty for a few days at least.

Sarah Palin understands about teamwork — and timing. I’m not sure Santorum and Perry do.
After the Romney Blob eats them, it may be too big and too late to stop it.

Got my doubts that dropping out would help Newt. I would not put it past Santorum to endorse Romney within a month. And he will have his reasons to do so, I exspecter.

Santorum equals the king of earmarks, voted to raise the minium wage, voted to allow the govt to regulate wages which favors unions. Santorum lost his own state not just because of his endorsement of Spector which was a huge mistake but that ONE vote went to Obamacare. Spector put it over the top. Thank you Santorum!
