RealClear Republican Presidential Polls as of January 17:
South Carolina, Monmouth University: Romney 33, Gingrich 22, Paul 12, Santorum 14, Perry 6
South Carolina, Rasmussen Reports: Romney 35, Gingrich 21, Paul 16, Santorum 16, Perry 5
Florida, PPP (D): Romney 41, Gingrich 26, Santorum 11, Paul 10, Perry 4
Florida, Sunshine State News/VSS: Romney 46, Gingrich 20, Santorum 12, Paul 9, Perry 3
Nationwide ABC News/Wash Post Romney 36, Gingrich 16, Santorum 13, Paul 16, Perry 9
Nationwide Gallup Tracking: Romney 34, Gingrich 15, Santorum 15, Paul 12, Perry 6
Like it or not, the trend has been clear for weeks. If we wish a conservative to be our nominee, Perry should drop out of the race and we should coalesce around Gingrich or Santorum. As long as all three or even two of the three remain in the race the conservative vote will be split and RINO Romney will get the nomination.
Gingrich should challenge Santorum to a series of Lincoln-Douglas style one-on-one debates and if there is a clear winner, then the loser should drop out, or in the very least, we may be able to better decide which one is better suited to take on Romney and Obama.
May our very best conservative take on and defeat Romney/Paul and then wipe out Obama!!
It isn’t rocket science... If a majority of Santorum and Perry voters move to Gingrich Gingrich has a good chance of beating Romney. Otherwise conservatives are splitting their vote leaving the liberal Romney as being our nominee. Is Romney alright with you? Because if he’s not, somethings got to change otherwise he will.
Santorum is a good guy, but he is never going to have what it takes to do what Newt did in the debate last night, which was fire people up. I like non-politically-correct, direct answers.
Hi Jim,
I couldn’t agree more. I think all here know I’m as anti-Romney as you or anyone else.
I like your suggestion but don’t you feel this really should have been sorted out prior to the SC vote? I mean Mitten’s lead in Florida is even higher than the other three put together (or almost the exact same). After SC that gap is sure to go HUGE.
With the MSM already picking our winner as they do every single election (Even the Dems’), it may be too late.
I favor Santorum over Newt at this juncture, but would be fine with either as a national candidate.
I don’t pretend to have anywhere even near the lifetime political activism experience that most folks on FR do. But Jim, honestly, after 15 years at it this way with the same ‘ol thing, we either have to accept we aren’t Republicans (meaning that WE are the “kooks” of our party, as we call the true socialists of the Dems), and that it just may be time to go, even if “going” doesn’t get us anywhere, or anything, put personal pride and conviction back.
Look, my degrees are in poly sci, I’m not naive. I know these things (our ideals) and ideologies and what not rising and making a real difference through establishment ranks starts at the extreme local level. I know we are working hard there. But really, is it worth all that work and time (talking 15-20 more years here, if we’re lucky) for that outside a chance?
Or, do you take your winnings (property) and go home (or make a new home?).
It is the same thing with casino gambling. You get lucky and win 10K, well, considering the math, this is now when you should play it all and keep playing as this is the time you have the best odds to make the most money (you are gambling with the houses money, already and if you play 5X craps then you are way in advantage). Or others say, you got your money, take it and go!
Thanks.
because even though Perry has dismal numbers the still has 5 or 6% which can go to one conservative in the race.
He is going no where and he needs to get out and does another conservative.
Romney is only going to win this for the establishment and FOX of we keep splitting the conservative vote.
I agree until you suggest Rubio for VP. We have way too few good people in Congress now to be sending the great ones to the Executive Branch.
what slime please?
I wouldn't vote for Newt even if Perry dropped out. He's closer to Mitt than he is to Santorum or Perry, as Santorum said last night.
In case you didn’t notice, Reagan isn’t running. Our choices are standing in front of you. That’s all there is. Either we stand divided and lose or come together and support the best conservative actually running to take down Obama.
Santorum is young, he’d be wise to accept a VP slot under Gingrich. They’re both likely to lose if they don’t come together.
Getting behind Gingrich is the only chance to assure only 4 years for 0bama.
Romney will be child's play for 0bama and he, no doubt, is looking forward to a Romney nomination.
while i love them both, they will both ENSURE a immediate national lose.
Jindal is too much a caricature, and we can’t have another after Bush- idiocy, yes, but reality too.
Ryan, I feel the MSM cut him off at the knees earlier and I wasn’t impressed with his ability to respond on the fly (like Obama, he is not quick on his feet).
Rubio is good, if he is NBC. Sorry, I don’t obsess over it like some, but its common sense and if you don’t qualify, then sorry =(. I’m certainly not willing to give Obama false legitimacy because “I want one too.”
Even in conservative circles, common sense is SOOO hard to extract out of some groups/people. It is the most accurate analogy to “pulling teeth.”
Newt is frequently criticized for his ego - but IMHO Santorum and Perry are equal opportunity megalomaniacs.
Do they seriously believe they are more qualified and experienced to handle Washington than Newt?
What part of ‘Mangle Mitt’ don’t they understand?
“If any of these guys can work the system and actually change this countrys big government direction it is Gingrich. “
That’s exactly why I support Gingrich. Just finished reading the Cheney biography “Angler” - if it shows anything, it shows how important a deep knowledge of how the process works is.
Newt is quite a bit more conservative than McCain. We'd be making forward progress.
Romney is Bill Clinton part II, an outright enemy of the republic. Romney is so bad it would be better for the country to have 4 more years of Obama kept in check with an outraged and alert electorate and congress.
“A Gingrich/Santorum ticket with Perry publicly promised a cabinet position would destroy Romney and Obama”
I agree. Add to that a promise of Col Allen West for Defense Sec
Well then you can all write me in if Romney wins and is the nominee, because I would then be the best conservative actually running.
All I have to do to be “running” is post on every single internet forum in the world the link to voter reg and the link that properly spells my legal name.
I would make free ring tones that people would use in public that spelled out my name letter by letter each time someone called.
Mittens is not a conservative!
It’s obvious that like Huntsman, Perry doesn’t stand a chance. Huntsman did the right thing. If Perry would now drop out and endorse the leading conservative, then it would help defeat RINO Romney who is a sure loser against Obama.
Paul doesn’t stand a chance either, but his over-inflated ego won’t let him face reality. He’s in it to make his liberaltarian statement, not to win. I don’t think Perry’s in that boat. He’s a good man and gave it his best shot, but his support numbers are going down, not up.
Romney is the business as usual big government establishment RINO.
We are the conservative grassroots resistance.
Rebellion is brewing!!
NO MORE RINOS!!
Jim, I hope the voters in SC are listening. We absolutely need to coalesce around a conservative candidate.
Despite the few FReepers who do not like Newt because they are still waiting for Jesus to announce, it is the critical moment to unite and defeat Romney.
Persoanlly I'd love to see him as UN Ambassador, or head of the National Endowment for the Arts. :)
Nice approach but the rub is if Romney throws Paul a bone and he drops out supporting Romney we’re done no matter who does what.
Not sure if that’ll happen but it’s the worst case scenario
