If you are looking for a conservative alternative to Romney and had to choose today between Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry or Rick Santorum, which one would you choose?
Final results of the Free Republic 1/9/2012 non-Romney Conservative Straw Poll (see post 548)
Newt | 225 | 59.7% |
Perry | 77 | 20.4% |
Santorum | 75 | 19.9% |
They didn’t.
1 = vote for Newt.
2 = vote for Perry
3 = vote for Santorum

Lets pray the rest of the United States are as aware as Freepers are that Newt is/WAS the only one who can/has made a change in Washington.
People, are you listening to Rush???
Newt is playing the class envy game with these attacks on capitalism. I am not pro Romney but his corporations have the right to make as much money as they wish, my gosh, people.
Newt is Tone Deaf and he is not a friend of conservatives. I am not sure he is more than 10% more genuine than Romney!
Please, please, rethink Gingrich for President. He is unpredictable and will do Anything for himself. I appreciate him knocking Newt but in doing so he is scorching serious conservative principles!
Are you SURE you want him as our President? I know he debates very well and I enjoy him in the debates, but seriously, look what he is doing, attacking Romney from the free ping LEFT! We will never ever be able to trust our president if it’s Gingrich!
Rethink this, mydearest fellow Freepers. Rethink. We will need to coalesce behind someone soon, but I have grave grave doubts about Gingrich. Based on facts: he talks a talk but never walks the walk.
I can understand why everyone is impressed with Newt’s eloquence off the cuff. I can’t fathom why a single Freeper supports him over Santorum or Perry. The guy gave scores of speeches on Cap and Trade, totally falling for the specious hoax, and cuddled the the vicious Pelosi on a couch. He supports statehood for Puerto Rico, which will kill the GOP. The guy is a fountain of nutty ideas. Better than the Failure or Romney? Yes, but enthusiasm for Gingrich mystifies me. Bob
oops. Plus 1 for Perry. Sorry.
Thank you dear Father in Freepdom!
Don't believe everything you hear, Gunny.

Thank you for running this poll, and for doing the final tabulation work. It’s very illuminating.
I heard it from Herself! She LIED? SHE LIED TO EVERYONE?!
Say it ain't so, Joe!
No, I made it. I’m listed in post number 548.
Roll Tide! 3 straight years with the National Championship in Alabama!
UA, AU, UA!!!!! Roll Tide, War Eagle, Roll Tide!!! LOL!
But we do need a president that is willing to take unpopular positions and then convince everyone that it is the right position to take. Gingrich can do that. Santorum is a nice guy. Gingrich is basically a jerk. And what we need right now is a jerk.
In this day and age and at this time the last thing we need is a nice guy to be pushing the conservative agenda against the establishment. Gingrich has faced down the establishment and has a track record of accomplishment (most notably one of welfare reform with a democrat president).
In that sense Gingrich excites me. I know he will not lay down on the job.
It’s a pretty sad commentary when 60% of FREEPERS are willing to cast their lot with a guy who calls himself a “Realpolitik Wilsonian”, admires FDR, and claims that the era of Reagan is over. REALLY sad.
Chuck U’ Shumer stated in 2006 that if Democrats won the Seante but Santorum remained, he’d consider the night a defeat. That’s how fine a man Santorum is, but even here, 60% are susceptible to BS about him, to the point that they support a global warming, big government alarmist over him. **sigh** Bob
Rick Perry - yes
I appreciate your willingness to back Gingrich, and I note your anxiety. However, I also know that the above italicized part of your post is basically the talking point that the establishment has been running against Gingrich for weeks now.
I don't buy the unpredictable and angry labels that have been placed on him. He was predictable as gravity when he was Speaker of the House. He pushed the Contract with America with integrity. He said he would accomplish those votes and he did. Then he went BEYOND that and actually followed the major portions through to completion: welfare reform, balanced budget, paid down debt, etc.
The other talking points are purely the smear-craft of the Romney/Krauthammer wing of the establishment.
I predict he will do as is stated in his 21st century contract with America. He kept his word in the past; I believe he'll do it again.
Go here for The 21st Century Contract with America
I agree with Marlowe that Gingrich will be an SOB getting this done. That's what has the GOP establishment fearing him....he actually did it over their dead bodies last time.
They vastly prefer being liberal-light to being conservative anything.
I guarantee you that if Romney wins South Carolina that that will lead to a Romney victory in Florida, and that this race will then be over and it will belong to Romney.
Conservatives are allowing the enemy to divide them at the most crucial point of the battle. It is time to come together and back a fighter.
Thanks for running this poll, Jim.
I am an enthusiastic Newtonian so I am pleased with the results, but the real question is when and how do we conservatives consolidate our votes and support behind one non-Romney candidate?
Some folks have said it is already too late but I don’t believe this. I think after FL votes is the time to start, but I don’t know how to proceed.
I would love to see an effort begun here on FR to try to head off Romney before an ongoing Newt-Santorum-Perry dogfight for second allows Romney to clinch the nomination with well under 50% of the primary vote.
I don’t know, but I am expecting at least one of these guys to drop out after South Carolina or Florida, then I think we grassroots conservatives should coalesce around the leading non-Romney conservative soon after. Gingrich, Perry or Santorum are all infinitely better than Obama, Romney or Paul. And it’s probably the only way we’re going to successfully block Romney and the establishment RINOs. I like Gingrich, but I’m not married to him. If Perry or Santorum come out on top, I’ll be happy and will pull for the leading Romney/Paul killer whoever he may be. If we can keep Romney from gaining more than one third of the vote, we should have a pretty good chance of defeating him. NO ROMNEY!! NO PAUL!! NOBAMA!!
What YOU and Rush missed is the fact that if Romney is the front-runner, he will be FORCED to answer these charges about Bain Capital......fair or not.
The Obama Campaign and liberal media will turn Romney into the most evil thing since Halliburton (humor intended).
If Romney cannot handle this now, he has no place as our nominee. THAT is what Newt is doing here.
How can anyone favor Newt after the garbage that has come out of his mouth in the last few days?
He has come out of his closet (if he ever was really in it after Nancy’s couch)
wow...still think this guy is a believer in capitalism...?
The only thing Gingrich is missing from his campaign is a new slogan...I AM THE 99%!!!
Clue you:
Listen to Newt Gingrich himself.
