New York Lawmakers Reportedly Ask for Mercy for Tourist Arrested With Gun at 9/11 Memorial

New York lawmakers are reportedly asking the Manhattan District Attorney's Office to show mercy to a Tennessee tourist who was arrested for bringing a gun to the 9/11 Memorial.

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., D-Queens, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, personally asked Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office not to push for the 3 1/2-year minimum sentence for Meredith Graves, 39, the New York Post reports.

“By prosecuting this woman and seeking 3 1/2 years of jail, we are shooting our own [gun-control] efforts in the foot and giving the rest of the country ammunition,” Vallone said.

Graves had a .32-caliber Kel-Tec handgun in her purse when she went to the memorial on Dec. 22 and tried to check it with a cop after she saw a sign reading “No Guns.”

Vallone cited a recently passed House bill that would allow people to carry registered guns between all states regardless of local laws.

“Clearly, the laws are too strict here, but that’s something we need to work out for ourselves without honoring licenses to carry guns in states where felons can carry them,” he said.

After Graves was arrested, police found a white substance in her purse. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is awaiting test results before considering charges, the Post reports.

Councilman Vincent Ignizio, R-Staten Island, said he fears that cops and prosecutors are trying to make an example of Graves.

“It seems like this is more about making an example of her than it is punitive measures for her offense,” Ignizio said. “And I just think a judge will take that into consideration when handing down her sentence.”

It seems that he is more interested in keeping unconstitutional state power than in justice.

I posted this on another thread about the same incident:

I know which states I can travel armed in and which I cant.
I do believe she should have had this information before leaving her home state.

that being said....NYC and to an even greater extent, NJ are by their actions guilty of defying the 2nd amendment to the US Constitution...and if we had a decent US Attorney General, there would be investigations and arrests of these criminals...one criminal I would arrest would be Mayor Bloomberg of NYC....he defecates on the Constitution, not just over the 2nd amendment, but the 1st and Lord knows how many other amendments. You cant put salt or trans-fats in the food you sell...thanks to Bloomberg.

my pre-written response to all things Bloomberg:
Bloomers is a Crony-capitalist, nebbish, poor little rich boy, self hating Jew, tiny buttwipe of a man...the only reason he is probably not a fag (the jury is still out) is that he has the greatest aphrodisiac of all time, billions of dollars....he decries the 2nd amendment, but whines about how the enemy’s first amendment rights to worship are being usurped....even though Islam is NOT a religion but a murder cult

this story is really depressing. That they would prosecute this woman so aggressively is a travesty.

Funny, I went to a Bass Pro in Tx and they had a checkpoint with a sign that said “check firearms here”

I asked the security guy if I had to check in CCW.
He said “Aww hell naw! That’s for repairs and returns!”

NY State is the spiritual home of Progressivism. For Progressives, guns are one of the great evils of their religion, and they are merciless about pursuing any transgressors.

Also, I imagine that Cyrus Vance Jr. is running for a higher office soon. The DA using his bully-pulpit to make a name for himself here in NY was perfected by Eliot Spitzer.

“this story is really depressing. That they would prosecute this woman so aggressively is a travesty.”

Not really surprising given that they do the same for travelers unfortunate enough to have to change planes in NY and recheck baggage like the recent Tea Party leader that got snagged a few weeks ago in direct violation of Federal Law no less. Avoid NY, it’s worse than CA when it comes to irrational fears of guns, and that’s saying something.

"That they would prosecute this woman so aggressively is a travesty."

So now she becomes a poster child for those of us who argue against the Libtard "common-sense" gun laws.
Give a Libtard and inch and they'll take a mile, and then some - they just can't help themselves.

Once this story made front-page news it became a serious political dilemma for New York City officials. On the one hand they are hell-bent on maintaining their own police state with no respect for Constitutional rights, but at the same time they can’t use these heavy-handed tactics on tourists who represent a huge chunk of the city’s business income and tax revenues.

I'm generally familiar with guns laws in other states - certainly make sure I know regarding states I'm traveling through. But...are there states where "felons can carry them?"

In previous post should have said, "where felons can carry them legally".

I avoid New York and New Jersey like the plague. Nothing good can come from going into or thru those states.

Graves had a .32-caliber Kel-Tec handgun in her purse when she went to the memorial on Dec. 22 and tried to check it with a cop after she saw a sign reading “No Guns.”

And the lesson is to ignore the "No Guns" signs (just like criminals do) because even trying to do the right thing will get you in as much trouble as getting caught for not doing the right thing.

Exactly.

An unjust law is no law at all. And trying to comply with an unjust law will only place you at the mercy of those that created it. (IE: unjust people)

And an unjust people, by nature, will never deal justly with you.
