I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, Im guessing if they arent rich theyre very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.
At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. Id be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than youd expect from that age. They told me that theyd decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I dont know if theyre staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)
When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadnt reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I dont, it is obvious that this is how its done. These people are only taking advantage of benefits put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.
Yessim, TC. Whatever you say, TC. If I have egg on my face this time tomorrow, I owe you a couple of boxes of pink Restorative.
be good to you. And be ready to delegate!
*hugs*
Nite!
Reminds me of a conversation I had with my alter ego about how many beers to drink.
I love arguing with myself. I almost always win.
It was a fun party, and I didn’t have to play most of the games, because I can barely move ;-).
Also, I got to admire outstanding tile floors, counters, and wall-coverings, because the husband of the hostess is a tiler, when the construction business is building ... and since there hasn’t been much construction lately, he’s been tiling every possible surface in their house. I love a good floor!
“At least I thought I was being friendly.” Thanks for the heads-up. If I ever have the opportunity to try absinthe, I’ll ask my family to lock me in the basement and not let me out. Ya think twelve hours is enough for it to wear off?
“ALWAYS trust the beer! “ I bet your Dad was a swell guy!
“I would share the rest of the conversation with you, but some of it was personal. “ It’s very considerate of you not to disclose personal matters about you or you with us. You and you both have integrity and can obviously be trusted. Well, I’m not sure about you, but you, certainly.
Re: post 700
I haven’t the foggiest notion what you’re talking about but I’ll fight to the death for your right to say whatever it is you said.
I’d like to post one sobering fact and then lay it to rest.
In September, my husband developed debilitating pain and began to decompensate in the physician’s office. Fortunately, the hospital was in the same complex. He was admitted, MRI’d, hydrated, medicated, dx’d w/renal calculi, and released the following morning all better, thank the Creator. The bill for one overnight stay was >$12K.
Fortunately, we have insurance.
Now, how well do you suppose you’re prepared for a few of those episodes?
Just a bit of consciousness raising here.
Subject closed.
Didn’t Cyndi Lauper and Rod Stewart record “I got you under my skin” but couldn’t get it released because he was smoking a cigarette like Frank Sinatra when he recorded it with Dina Shore live on TV? Or was that in the parallel universe?
“Bills Eagle Scout project....” If you get a chance, could you tell us what they’re building?
I heard it was one of these, but without the little thing on the left:
Shhh! I told her the check was in the mail. Stop giggling. No, I don't know if it will work, but you know what they say. Hector! They don't say that! If they do, then they need to be paddled! Now curl up and go to sleep.
“...without the little thing on the left.” I hope that doesn’t compromise its structural integrity. If you ask me, the roof is a torte in the making. However, no one asked me and rightfully so.
What’s a colllar? Unless, of course, you meant coll3lar. (You use the Italian pronunciation for the 3.)
“Of all the humble opinions I’ve seen or heard, mine is the most humble.” Rest assured, your humility speaks for itself, for you and for you, too.
G’night!
Bill (and his all-amateur crew) are building a shelter at a county park. I think it was supposed to be about 10’x12’, but it’s grown now since they set the posts in the wrong spot! It will include a bulletin board, racks for park information, and (now) two rows of cubbyholes/lockers for users of the hiking and bicycling trails to store their things while using the park.
Tom (#2 son) is beginning to organize a project at a different park, something to do with paving and landscaping near a nature center. Our troop has two boys who are nearly 18, so they have to finish their projects before Tom, who is only 15, can use the work-force. And of course, landscaping goes better in the spring/summer. The Mecklenburg parks department has a list of things that need to be built, repaired, and maintained, and has supplies or money for supplies, but doesn’t have any workers available, so it’s a great opportunity for Scouts.
Now I'm confused. I thought under the Italian pronunciation the 3 was both silent and invisible, so that the spelling remains 'collar," although the pronunciation changes radically, except for those from the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region.
