Virginia Attorney General Intervenes in GOP Primary Ballot Dispute

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is intervening in the Virginia presidential primary dispute and plans to file emergency legislation to address the inability of most Republican presidential candidates to get their name on the ballot, Fox News has learned. Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul qualified for the Virginia primary, a contest with 49 delegates up for grabs. The failure of other candidates to qualify -- notably Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry -- led to complaints that the 10,000-signature requirement is too stringent. Cuccinelli, who is a Republican, shared the concerns. "Recent events have underscored that our system is deficient," he said in a statement. "Virginia owes her citizens a better process. We can do it in time for the March primary if we resolve to do so quickly." Cuccinelli's proposal is expected to state that if the Virginia Board of Elections certifies that a candidate is receiving federal matching funds, or has qualified to receive them, that candidate will upon request be automatically added to the ballot. Two former Democratic attorneys general are also backing the move, along with a former Democratic state party chairman and a former Republican state party chairman. Former state Attorney General Tony Troy called the Virginia process a "legal and constitutional embarrassment."

It is a rational and reasonable qualification in that if a person is getting ‘national’ funding they should be entitled to be on any national ballot. This does illustrate that Republicans can be as crooked as Democrats when it comes to elections.

Mittens, Rupaul and the pubbie elite are very sad.

The AG is a good man.

It’s in the article:

“Sources told Fox News that Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is expected to support the emergency legislation as well.”

Since everything else is tied to Federal money, why not this. You receive Federal campaign funds, you are elegible, makes sense to me. That ruling should effect all states that want to try something.

AS in: if your school receives Federal money, you can not invoke Religion into the school activity, if you receive Fed. money....you can't or you must...etc. etc. etc.

In other words the few shall decide for the good of all?

It is true, you rarely post to agree with any one and based on most of your posts you must be a lawyer, or you flunked out of law school [if that is possible].

You take an illogical position and try to make it appear to be reasonable and logical.

You fail with that, but succeed in acting as an irritant, congrats.

Great news! Cuccinelli sounds like a good guy. He has sued the Feds over Obamacare, he has defended the Arizon law allowing police to check for illegals during a stop, he was against VA schools adding gays and lesbians to “protected classes” for college admission, he has challenged the EPA over global warming.

Maybe he should be running for president. I’d vote for him.

They’re just really lucky Ron Paul qualified, otherwise I think Romney would have automatically been declared the winner without a vote just as Obama as the only person on the Democrat ballot is. In that case Romney might have had a strong legal challenge countering any changes now. Of course, for PR purposes he might not have wanted to pursue that.

I am reading some naysayers here. Just take note, if it was your man being left off by insider Republicans, WE would still AGREE that this emergency action is a GOOD thing.

It was the FEW that changed the rules in November.

What goes on in Va., DOES effect the whole of the American voters. VA., is not, nor should be a major deciding factor in electing a candidate based on only TWO people on the ballot, when there are others to be considered.

Next time somewhere, sometime, it could be your man/woman who was left out because of some insider shenanigans. Think about it.

All conservatives ask for is a fair fight. It’s liberals who want to suppress everyone else’s rights to force their desired outcomes on us.
