Texas is its own place. Known for oil, cowboys, cattle, and distinguished swagger, it is the kind of place to which newcomers adapt rather than one which bends for newcomers. Not surprising for a place that used to be its own country. Thus the oft spoken motto, Dont mess with Texas.
Yet Texas is a big place, and phrases like remember the Alamo and Texas proud resonate from Galveston beaches to Amarillo plains. And thats a good thing, because right between those beaches and those plains, a fight is brewing thats winnable, but which requires some backbone.
Case in point: the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent a letter to the Athens, Texas city council demanding it remove a nativity scene from the lawn of the county courthouse there. According to FFRF, the nativity scene is unconstitutional and simply must go.
Its nothing new for FFRF, which enjoys spending its time bullying local governments all across the country. All that has to happen is for a disgruntled citizen to call or e-mail an outfit like FFRF, and its intimidation machine springs into action.
Once a group like FFRF begins to apply pressure, it trusts that the city, township, or county it is targeting will simply fold for fear of bad PR or to avoid the hassle (and expense) of going to court.

I hope the city stands up to them. The hassle and expense would be worth the fight. Break their bank.
The ole gal behind the counter said: "**** that PC bull****. It's Christmas." LOL!
Makes me feel just a little bit better about my local government. Not that I trust them with money.

I don't see anything to do with freedom from religion here.
Dont Mess with Texas? Right. And yet they took paying college tuition to illegal aliens and forced vaccinations. I used to have lots of respect for Texans. Actually put in a lot of faith that they could be the saviors.
Yes, Goliad...we should never forget that massacre!
This is an outrage! What freakin' business is it of theirs?
That’s those atheist for you and Yankees.
Contrary to what you seem to believe, it’s not just Texas. The small suburban Detroit city where I work has a life-size nativity scene complete with a manger that’s at least 9 feet high on the front lawn at city hall. They even illuminate it at night.
Bragging and thinking that you’re special or better than others is what turns non-Texans off about Texans.
Not one person ever got a vaccine in the State of Texas that they didn't want. He issued a EO so insurance companies would pay for it with an opt out. He got in trouble for not going through the legislative branch first. That was the problem. Not some Romney talking point.
As for in-state tuition, you're blaming us for the fall out of the Fed's refusal to enforce the law. In Texas we catch illegals, put them in jail and the Federal Government releases them the same night. A couple of weeks ago Dallas PD arrested an illegal for domestic violence and turned him over to ICE for deportation. They released him a few hour later and he went home and killed his American girl friend. A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece. That is typical of what we deal with in Texas, so until you rise up against the Federal Government and demand they come to Texas and defend your fellow Americans, you can shut the hell up about how we deal with it.
Has this group attacked your nativity scene yet? From what I read, they go after any nativity in any state. They are after one in Texas City, Texas also.
GOOD POST
No one was ever forced to have the Gardisil vaccination (assuming that's the one you're refering to). The legislature stopped that scheme before it started ... and rightfully so.
“They released him a few hour later and he went home and killed his American girl friend. A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece.”
Do you know if both of these thugs have been charged with murder?
And do you know if they will be able to continue to take advantage of Rick Perry’s In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens program, or will Gov. Perry make them pay full price next semester?
LOL!
You might want to get your facts straight.
No one paid college tuition to illegal aliens, they simply get the same in state tuition that everyone else does.....IF they can prove residence in the state.
No one forced a vaccination on anyone, either. Texans have the ability to opt their children out of ANY mandated vaccine by filing the proper form with the health department.
yes they have and one of them will be executed by the citizens of Texas for his crime.
And do you know if they will be able to continue to take advantage of Rick Perrys In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens program, or will Gov. Perry make them pay full price next semester?
That is an idiotic statement as neither would have been eligible to begin with. In order for an illegal to receive in-state tuition they must have attended high school in Texas for their last 3 years and to get into a State College in Texas they have to, just like the rest of Texas students, graduate in the top 10% of their class.
Students from other states are not put at a disadvantage to illegals, they are at a disadvantages in Texas because they are not Texans, just like Texas kids are at a disadvantage in other states.
