Gingrich lead jumps to 16%

GOP frontrunner Newt Gingrich is garnering more support than ever in this presidential campaign season, with the first national public opinion poll after the Saturday night ABC News Republican candidates’ debate showing Gingrich with a 16% lead over his closest challenger, Mitt Romney.

The scientific Poll Position survey of registered voters who say they’ll vote in their state’s 2012 Republican primary or caucus produced these results: Gingrich 39%, Romney 23%, Ron Paul 11%, Michele Bachmann 6%, Rick Perry 5%, Rick Santorum 4%, Jon Huntsman 2%, someone else 2%, and undecided or no opinion at 9%.

A week ago, Poll Position’s GOP horse race poll found Gingrich at 37%, Romney at 23%, Paul at 7%, and Bachmann at 6%.

In the new survey conducted last night, the poll questioned 582 registered voters nationwide who said they’d vote in their state’s Republican primary or caucus.  The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4%.  The full crosstabs for the poll: Poll Position crosstabs – GOP horse race 12-11-11.

I respectfully disagree with JimRob on Newt, and I’ve outlined why. We’d be fools to ignore Newt’s record and negatives, all because we believe a career politician’s “promises” just as he’s running for the highest office. I’m not playing Charlie Brown to Lucy Van Pelt with the football.

And since when does a voice of conservatism need to be silenced?

After watching the GOP establishment ORDER its voting base to obediently fall on the RINO sword, election after election, I became one of millions that finally stirred to action under the Gadsden flag. I am part of the conservative revolution that is not going to settle for a RINO candidate. With the same passion I had in November of 2010, I’m going to fight for America to be the conservative Republic that I learned to love and respect growing up. My marching orders come from the U.S. Constitution, my friend, not from inside-the-beltway Washington elites.

Yes, my words might offend and annoy some, but for every person that abandons conservative principles, there will scores of others who are inspired to act with courage.

History is on my side. Gingrich’s political past demonstrates that he is not a conservative. He is not Tea Party. He is part of the crumbling foundation of the GOP establishment that is falling into itself.

You know, you can put lipstick on that RINO, but he’s still a RINO.

I respect you more than I can express; you are one of the indispensable men needed every generation. All I'm saying is that the fight doesn't end here; we can't expect to win the entire war in one battle. There will be other election cycles in which we will further the goal post.

At this time, we need a solid victory and can't sit it out because we didn't get our ideal candidate.

In my opinion, yes.

Depends on who the gop nominee is. If it’s mittens, I think the correct question is more ‘will mittens take away enough votes from Ron Paul to usher in barky?’ I think Ron Paul will easily get about 15-20% of the vote in the general if he runs as third party. Beyond that, who knows? That’s still more than enough to swing the election, although remember that Ron Paul pulls some votes from the left as well. His running third party wouldn’t necessarily mean a barky victory.

What’s to stop him? He’s retiring from Congress. He’s already run as a third party candidate for President once before. It’s not like there is some sort of love connection between him and the gop. Read some of the comments on any Ron Paul threads to get an idea of the sort of animosity out there already. And these same folks who routinely use terms like “paultard” are all of a sudden expecting Ron Paul to step up and “take a hit for the gop team?”

Opinion polls are a 1st Amendment exercise of free speech and free press (just as your comments on FR are also such an excercise).

No one is preventing anyone from voting (contrary to your question).

One could turn the tables and ask you: “Why do you not actually let people conduct and participate in polls?”

I'm voting for Santorum Jan 21st—I ain't voting for no RINO unless it's against Obama in the general—and gawd I hope it don't come down to that!

The nut (RP) in the race is giving Obama real hope as his numbers stay almost as high as his big delusional ego. His supporters are more jihadist than patriotic and would gladly give Obama another term by voting for a 3rd Party Paul.

Newt IS a failed GOP leader. He bombed after not even a whole entire year as Speaker ! I watched with my own eyes to my horror. Hell, I don’t think we’ve had a truly effective GOP Speaker with balls since Uncle Joe Cannon.

I still am not totally sold on Newt, but if Romney folds anytime soon, it’s a whole new race.

Romney is done now. There is no way he can win the nomination. So why not make it a whole new race now? This is a primary. Any vote for anyone other than Mitt is a vote against Mitt. It isn't winner-take-all. So why not pick your candidate now instead of settling for a RINO like Newt Gingrich? The longer Newt keeps his traction, the harder it will be to beat him later on. And by next October, Republicans everywhere will be realizing that John McCain will be going down for another loss against the younger Baraq Obama. And even if Newt somehow wins, we will still be faced with GingrichCare.

This gets tiring. Newt Gingrich has ONLY ever ACTED as a Conservative when in office. ONLY. So either find some RINO examples when he was in office or STFU.

It doesn't matter much what he's said in his private enterprises because he was paid to talk, provide IDEAS, and do so in the capacity as a talking head. Of COURSE he will have espoused, and will continue to espouse many many ideas. Because he's an idea man. BUT WHAT HE HAS SUPPORTED THROUGH HIS VOTES HAS BEEN AS AN AUTHENTIC CONSERVATIVE.

I suggest you take that flag, put it down, and start providing some backing for your stance. Otherwise, you are just another blowhard hiding behind a Tea Party moniker.

Thanks, I try. I was going to merely alter it from “Rick Perry has more red flags than a May Day Parade” to “Newt has—” but I didn’t think it sounded original enough. Of course, both are true (of course, if I wanted to be mean, I could’ve said “Newt has as many wives as the last three Presidents combined”... not like the media won’t remind the voters of that on a minute-by-minute basis if he gets the nomination).

Did you ever notice how senile Ron Paul often looks and sounds? He will be 77 by November 2012.
That’s as old as Reagan when he LEFT office, and the libs would chew RP to pieces if he appeared to be costing Obama this throne.

Remember James Stockdale, Ross Perot’s running-mate: “Who am I? Why am I here?”

Paul cannot actually get elected, plus he has tried many times before and gotten no where.

Just be thankful for each point he takes from Romney. Dittos for Huntsman.
