Saudi Arabia plans to obtain nuclear weapons, but its nuclear power will be only for peaceful use, a former intelligence official said Monday told a security conference on Monday.
"Our efforts and those of the world have failed to convince Israel to abandon its weapons of mass destruction, as well as Iran... therefore it is our duty towards our nation and people to consider all possible options, including the possession of these weapons," said Prince Turki al-Faisal, quoted by AFP.
He added, "A (nuclear) disaster befalling one of us would affect us all."
The Sunni Muslim kingdom last summer said it would build 16 nuclear reactors for energy, but Faisals remarks were the first indication, at least in public, that Saudi Arabia may acquire nuclear weapons.
Israel has maintained a policy of nuclear ambiguity, meaning it does not confirm or deny assumptions that it has nuclear weapons, perhaps as many as several hundred.
However, Saudi Arabias biggest worry is Iran, run by a Shiite Muslim regime that openly says it wants to head a new Islamic empire in the Middle East.
The Islamic Republic is on a collision course with the West and Shiite Muslim Arab countries as it proceeds towards the capability of both manufacturing and delivering a nuclear weapon.
Saudi Arabia focused on peaceful use of nuclear energy at the energy conference in the oil-rich monarchy. Once our nuclear project is complete and we have satisfied the kingdoms demand for electricity, Saudi Arabia plans to export electricity, said Khalid Al-Sulaiman, vice president of renewable energy at King Abdullah City.

“Peace” in Islam means the same thing Obama means when he says something is “fair.”
There is a HUGE difference between weapons and power.
The peaceful use is - we leave you alone if you bow to mecca 1000 times a day and accept their cave dweller religion from hell or they will melt your skeleton to "pieces." That kind of peaceful.
Historians will rank this as the worst of the many, many failures of this administration: the failure to deal firmly with Iran, forcing Iran’s neighbors to go nuclear and essentially encouraging the proliferation of nuclear weapons in one of the most dangerous areas in the world.
The Sunnis going toe-to-toe with the Shi’ites in all out noo-ku-lar combat. I can see some benefits to that.
The Gulf States acting in concert will not allow Iran to Achieve the take over.
The action in Syria is for that purpose.
Bert, I think the Muslim Brotherhood gets marching orders and funding from Iran. I know the terrorist groups get arms and financial support from Iran through Syria.
Iran/Syria have figured heavily in the development of the most well recognized terrorist groups of the region, and the Muslim Brotherhood itself is an offshoot of them.
What other entity would be motivated to coordinate the efforts that have taken place in a number of nations, to topple their governments, all at the same time.
Iran/Syria have been the only two groups who have shown a proclivity to organize and proliferate this sort of activity. Everything focused on Israel right now, has sprung forth from Iran/Syria.
Iran is just expanding on it’s manipulations IMO.
It met with success as it fought to cause trouble in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our not confronting Iran let it be known that it could pull the same things in other nations, and the U. S. would more than likely stand by and do nothing about it, or even help it reach it’s goals as it did in Lybia, and perhaps soon in Syria.
I don’t think this was a grass roots spontaneous action in the nations around the Middle-East. Iran is the only nation that has shown a proclivity to be involved in other nation’s business, and would likely be driving it.
I can’t disagree
Thank you Bert.
I don’t think GWB could have sold America or much of the rest of the world about starting a war with Iran while still in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia and China in particular. And to the ME countries who might start to believe we weren’t just there to stabilize Iraq, but actually take over the middle east.
Iran was left to Obama to deal with. And he’s failed. Doesn’t help he’s a freaking muslim sympathizer at best, or a muslim practicing al-taqiyaa himself at worst.
My major beef with Bush on that matter didn’t start with him not attacking Iran. It began with him not warning Iran to stop arming the insurgents. It began with the Iran supplied IEDs killing large numbers of our men.
We knew where those things were coming from, who was supplying them, and who was training terrorists and sending them into Iraq.
Iran got a complete pass on every bit of their treachery related to Iraq and Afghanistan.
If we had given them an ultimatum, we could have escalated the level of our actions against them. We didn’t so much as whisper about it. I am exaggerating, because our side did touch on it, but they took no measures to stop it.
It was so bad IMO, that I actually felt Bush had betrayed our men by not addressing it and putting an end to it.
