Oregons Democratic Governor John Kitzhaber has said he will allow no further executions in the state while he is in office.
Mr Kitzhaber said he was stopping the death penalty as he considered it to be morally wrong.
The move will be a blow to the US system of capital punishment.
The move effectively halted the scheduled execution of convicted killer Gary Haugen, who had waived his appeals and was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Dec 6.
It is time for Oregon to consider a different approach, Mr Kitzhaber said in a statement. I refuse to be a part of this compromised and inequitable system any longer; and I will not allow further executions while I am governor.
Oregon has carried out two executions in the last 49 years, both during Mr Kitzhabers first administration as governor, the statement said.

And yet their sudden decision to completely stop this rash of executions will effect the nation?
Let’s see, the Governor has a problem with the rules of his State? More proof the Liberals care nothing about fixing problems because without them there wold be nothing to run a political campaign on. I suppose they will just accept natural attrition as the means to carry out the sentences of murders. Or worse, let them go back into society because of prison overcrowding.
Yep, Oregon. No lethal drugs for convicted murders, but lethal drugs for euthanasia. Quite the liberal paradise.
That is my question:
Why should Oregon effect any other state that has Capital punishment.
If they have a chickencrap Governor it does nothing to effect other states who elect Governors with a set, and who have the courage to carry out the laws of their state.
The only problem with Capital punishment is the length of time it takes to execute the sorry piece of garbage that has committed the foul act.Every death penalty law should have a specified length opf time for the execution to be carried out wihin 2 years would be about right.
More compassion for the criminal, he must be a man of religion
The Feds are trying to stop executions by making the drugs impossible to obtain.
ropes and bullets are easy to obtain.
Liberal mentality. Human life is cheap except for the guilty.
He took an oath to obey the laws and constitution of his state. Either repeal the law or enforce it. He should be impeached. Does his sudden “moral conscience” extend to halting abortions?
Euthanasia, abortion, but no capital punishment.
In Oregon, we kill the innocent, but not the guilty.
“Mr Kitzhaber said he was stopping the death penalty as he considered it to be morally wrong.”
Gosh Wally...What are his thoughts on murder?
Wouldn’t the standard answer be that he is personally opposed to the practice but would never force his morality on anyone else?
So, Mr. Kitzhaber, you are morally superior?
Oregon is a Leftist state—and socialists don’t have the high moral standing to execute anyone.
It takes a state secure in it’s sense of true justice to met out the ultimate penalty for the ultimate crimes.
The fact is if you don’t have capital punishment you are morally weak and mentally challenged about the concept of true justice—IOW it is best that you DON’T have capital punishment.
It’s okay to kill other human beings, as long as the act of killing is not a punishment.
/liberal thought
So why don't you just leave office and let someone else be dictator for a while?
Mike
And yet I love this state. I’m thinking it’s time to assess my own sanity. How did we get stuck with all the moonbats? Can’t we send them back to CA?
Cindie
I would like to know where in the Oregon Constitution is says that the Governor can just selectively enforce laws he doesn’t agree with. He could just commute this guy’s sentence to life instead on making this asinine gesture.
