WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was accused on Wednesday of flip-flopping for comments he made in 2007 indicating he was open to a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Romney's remarks, made on NBC's "Meet the Press" when he was a candidate for president, were circulated by rival Newt Gingrich's campaign the day after the former Speaker of the House of Representatives came under similar fire for suggesting during a debate Tuesday night that he was in favor of such a pathway for immigrants.
Opponents of a pathway, a large swath of the early-voting Republican electorate, have branded the proposal as equal to an amnesty for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.
Conservative Republican voters in early-voting states like Iowa have demonstrated little patience for candidates or office-holders who are receptive to any plans that would grant citizenship to illegal immigrants.
The Gingrich campaign noted that during the 2007 interview, Romney said "that those people who had come here illegally and are in this country, the 12 million or so that are here illegally, should be able to sign up for permanent residency or citizenship."

There is only one viable candidate on that stage that will end the illegal invasion, and that’s Herman Cain.
Hey you added “bot” to the word Newt! That was extremely clever and proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that all Gingrich supporters are mindless, knee-jerk people.
Well done!
Hank
And where would these American born masons and tile-setters be found? Here in DC the old time masons were Italian, imported from Italy for this specific skill. Now they are all Latin Americans. My white American contractor does a great job with sheetrock and 2x4s. Want something that requires a bit of skill, looks nice and won't turn to mush if it should get wet - can't be done.
“My white American contractor does a great job with sheetrock and 2x4s - Want something that requires a bit of skill, looks nice and won’t turn to mush if it should get wet - can’t be done.”
That is a damn lie. It is the same damned lie used by every employer too cheap and deceptive to pay the free-market wage needed to survive by any American-born tile-setter, mason, or other specific-skill job.
The RNC supports illegal immigration and amnesty because that is what the global corporate interests desire. No borders and $3 an hour.
If Republicans wanted the borders closed it would have been done on 9-12-01. Instead Bush and his pal Vicente Fox delayed their orchestrated plan for amnesty for several years and did nothing about illegal immigration.
Rove demonstrated his allegiance to the illegals years ago when he told Tom Tancredo to never again darken the door to the White House. The RNC wants Hispanics just like the Dems pretending that they will vote for the Republicans.
Americans need amnesty from this nightmare they need a path to their very own nation.
glenn beck endorses michele bachmann. just got an email.

Who was the e-mail from? Glen Beck or Michele Bachmann? Glen said on the radio, just the other day, that he told Michele that he was NOT endorsing her.
I don't deny that Romney is a RINO that the media wants to elect, but what is his immigration record as Governor?

humm. i just got back from being out of town for thanksgiving and saw your comment.
well “endorse” i guess is a politically charged word and may be wrong in this case. i’m an engineer so i deal in plain meaning. the email was from michele bachmann and here is the quote she says is from beck.
i know what the quote means but i should have included it:
There is somebody I think that is exceptional and truly comes the closest to embodying the spirit of Lincoln or Washington in this field. And I believe that it is Michele Bachmann.
We have to trust somebody. Thats not to say that there arent good candidates elsewhere. The others, many of them are good, decent men. But this woman is exceptional and I would ask that you would take a look at the character and the true life of Michele Bachmann. I believe she means what she says and says what she means.
I used to really like Michele. I could have voted for her. But, she is so mean-spirited. She is the first to kick her opponents when they’re down or try to exploit their political misfortunes for her own political gain. She did it to Pawlenty and then Perry and then Cain and before Newt was off the Debate Stage Tuesday night, Michele’s staff was sending out texts, Tweets and Facebook messages saying that Newt Gingrich was in favor of Amnesty. It’s like one lady said,on FOX News, the other day: “Michele Bachmann comes across as desperate.”
I don’t even like her any more. She is a political opportunist and I expect her to throw a hissy fit when she comes in 4th or 5th in Iowa.
No, that's not really a fantasy, but the number one straw man the pro-amnesty for illegals advocates constantly throw up to defend their pandering position.
Enforce the law, especially at the employer level, and begin improving border security (SECOND), and illegals will begin to self-deport.
