WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was accused on Wednesday of flip-flopping for comments he made in 2007 indicating he was open to a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Romney's remarks, made on NBC's "Meet the Press" when he was a candidate for president, were circulated by rival Newt Gingrich's campaign the day after the former Speaker of the House of Representatives came under similar fire for suggesting during a debate Tuesday night that he was in favor of such a pathway for immigrants.
Opponents of a pathway, a large swath of the early-voting Republican electorate, have branded the proposal as equal to an amnesty for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.
Conservative Republican voters in early-voting states like Iowa have demonstrated little patience for candidates or office-holders who are receptive to any plans that would grant citizenship to illegal immigrants.
The Gingrich campaign noted that during the 2007 interview, Romney said "that those people who had come here illegally and are in this country, the 12 million or so that are here illegally, should be able to sign up for permanent residency or citizenship."

I know. Those Mexican masons who wander across the boarder to do jobs laying stone and tile that few Americans even know how to do really need to be sent packing. They are destroying the market for lazy incompetent American builders.
No one suggested that. You were just told the facts in this matter.
I'm shocked by how many pro-illegal aliens there are on the forum, or who all of a sudden appeared. Playing the "Christian card," just like all good libs do. Pull out the Bible when it's convenient to "justify" criminal invaders.
These types must either profit in some way from illegal aliens. Or, live in such gated and remote areas, that they are some of the few left unaffected. The beheadings, drunken drivers, drug cartels don't bother them. That we used to be a country of laws doesn't bother them either.
No, annie , they are destroying the job market for American masons and tilesetters who want work aboveboard, not under the table while on the lonestar card and every other form of government medical and housing assistance.
Reagan had several other failures, including Lebanon, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Anthony Kennedy. And of course from the start, GHWB.
Good reporting, but alas above the understanding of the American people
Illegal aliens could give a crap about citizenship. What they really want is legal residency meaning they can work here legally and qualify for welfare programs. This is their primary goal plus their spawn are usually anchor babies so they are citizens who will one day vote by the millions
You are smart enough to know that most illegal aliens will self-deport if cut off from jobs via e-verify& employer sanctions and cut off from welfare via stricter verification. Do all that. Lock down the Mexico border with 10,000 military and a fence. Have a guest worker plan for agriculture only and you have a plan
So as far as rounding them up and tossing them out.....there are much easier ways but you already knew that. Oh .....we can also offer them free plane rides home including their anchor babies too if they elect to GTFO and self-deport
You can get rid of 60-75% of illegal aliens this way. The rest we toss out
Excellent and true. If we want to be branded cruel and heartless then we stay with the hard line antics. Otherwise, thoughtful analysis, like yours, shows that we need a immigration surgery, not butchery.
Well done and Happy Thanksgiving.
The truly cruel and heartless act would be to permit the Mexican invasion to turn the southern US states into an extension of the socialist, corrupt, drug-gang anarchy that is present day Mexico. Open-borders proponents advocate a policy that would kill American prosperity. One only has to look at the budget disasters in California and New Mexico and the violence along the border in Texas and Arizona to see the brutal reality of this predictable catastrophe.
Will you vote for them in November 2012?
{Then there is a large class who actually turn in honest work doing jobs Americans won’t do or cannot do, pay taxes, and pay their own way through life. }
By definition, they must also be driving illegally, have various levels of fake ID, and are magnets and enablers for other illegals.
So no, there really aren’t that many that are truly living honestly.
Betcha Annie got some nice tile work done cheaply by illegals and is now trying to make himself feel good. Too bad one of them didn’t injure themselves and sue him like no licensed contractor is able to do.
No license= they’re your employee, legally here or otherwise, and can wind up owning your house if they can convince a jury that they deserve it for their injuries (and yes, my livelihood is suffering because of underbidding by illegals.)
Good post and correct. You note the tri-fold problem with immigration - criminality/corruption (not just the act of immigrating, but true crimes), the welfare state, and bad immigration policy.
Hilarious how the NewtBots think whatever Mittens said absolves their guy. It doesn’t. It just shows we have TWO John McCains to avoid this year, and I will do so. Newt is dead to me. Mittens was already.
