Workers angry as Black Friday creeps into Thanksgiving

ST. LOUIS Lyndsey Shaw has been on the front lines of Black Friday in years past, helping to open the Best Buy store in Brentwood, Mo., by 5 a.m.
But when Best Buy decided to follow other retailers this year in moving up its opening time to midnight on Thanksgiving, Shaw worried she would have to miss her familys tradition of going out to see Christmas lights after their holiday dinner.
We dont usually get everything cleaned up and out the door until 10 p.m., she said.
Fortunately, her supervisor allowed her to work a Friday afternoon shift instead.
But with several other retailers, including Macys, Kohls and Target, also opening at midnight for the first time, a groundswell of protest has been brewing among people who worry that not all retail employees will be as lucky and that some will have to skip out early on family gatherings.
And moreover, critics assert, the earlier opening times are encroaching too much on a holiday that should be reserved for family not for shopping.

Ditto.
capitalism, spell it with me now. What, exactly about this, do you not like?
If they got commission on sales, I would see your point.
FAMILY...spell that out and tell me why being open 18 hours starting at 6:00 AM on Black Friday isn’t enough.
Ya know what? nevermind. Golly gee whiz maybe all those poor retail folks should go on strike and protest their poor treatment, and then they can “take down the man”.
One of my favorite days of the year.
It’s obvious you’ve only been on one side of the counter in your life.
OK, fool.
What a comeback, Jethro. That sixth grade education paid off for you.
Ya know what, the more I think about it the more I remember that everything I have ever achieved was handed to me.Oh yea, I remember getting that six figure job now for whining.
I have never gone shopping on Black Friday in my life. I do not expect that to ever change.
I’ve never worked retail, although I have done other poopie jobs. If retailers pay bonuses or OT or something to compensate for the madness, then the employees shouldn’t complain. But if they’re like suffer or get fired, they suck, IMO.
yes it’s true!! I am a SQUID!
I look for Black Friday online deals; but there is no way I'm lining up at 4:00 or 5:00 AM and risk getting trampled to get a "good deal". The day after Thanksgiving is more important to me as a day off than as a shopping day.
You can’t count into six figures, that’s eighth grade math, boy.
well ok you win I am a dumbass.
I agree. This push Christmas buying thing is going too far. People have lost the real meaning of “Christmas”.
People might have preferred sleeping in. I hit the bike trails Thanksgiving morning (usually reveling in cutting through the mall parking lot for the last time that year) and Tucson is a ghost town then. Other cities may be different though, we’re pretty laid back here.
