This week, we examine The Songbook of Jimmy Webb: Part 2, the Seventies.

In 1968, Webb met Patsy Sullivan, a model and the daughter of actor Barry Sullivan. Webb fell head over heels in love with her. There was just one problem. Jimmy Webb was 22 years old. Patsy was 13.

Some might say “Yikes!” Some might quote Jerry Lee Lewis: “You gotta start ‘em young and train ‘em right.” Webb understood the situation and decided that he would abstain from sex with Patsy, marry her when she turned 18, and start a family. Webb was going to do this right. Or so he thought at the time.

In 1970, Webb once again went into the recording studio, but this time he had a critical success, the album ”Words and Music”.

Jimmy Webb: “P. F. Sloan”

(One of these weekends, I’ll survey the Phil Sloan songbook.)

I go into the recording studio Monday.

A friend of mine who was once the national program director of Clear Channel is going to help me market my lectures via the Internet.

Webb’s relationship with the arch-conservative Glen Campbell had changed. From his original response, “Get a haircut,” Campbell now had respect for Webb’s song writing talents.
