As if the news of what Sandusky allegedly did is not bad enough, many say the way PSU handled the situation has made it even worse.
CBS 21 talked to three experts in public relations, and they said Penn State handled this terribly. As somebody who grew up in Pennsylvania idolizing Joe Paterno and Penn State, this whole situation just hurts.
Not only are the allegations disturbing, but the general consensus among local experts is that Penn State was not thinking of the kids when the news broke, they were thinking about their brand, and that was a terrible decision.
Penn State overruled everything, stated Soni Dimond of Soni Dimond Media. The image of Penn State, the brand was being protected and the children were not.
It's a total breakdown, agreed Roger Kelley of Central Penn College. It's amazing, Penn State is a top 10 player in football, but in terms of public relations, they were pretty much a bush-league operation.
The experts all agree. What happened in Penn State was terrible, but how Penn State handled it, made it much worse. First off, the university didn't seem to have any...plan.
People at the school knew Jerry Sandusky had a past. The university should have been prepared for this when the news hit.
What is Penn State going to do to make sure this doesn't happen again? questioned Peter Shelly of Shelly Communications. What is the university's plan moving forward? That is not what they talked about right out of the shoot.
That lack of a plan allowed the story to linger and get worse. Instead of taking swift action to address the public, their donors and alumni, the school seemed to keep quiet, as if they were hoping this would just go away...instead it has just exploded.

Say it isnt so, Joe.
Paterno was told about a severe locker room incident by a grad assistant and Paterno then took the initiative and reported it further up and met with the Athletic Director. I don’t think Paterno was the problem. He was probably expecting a Sandusky arrest when the investigation was complete.
And a pedophiles is indeed a homosexual if he has same-sex activity. What percentage of homosexuals are pedophiles compared to heterosexual men?
NO cheers, unfortunately.
I want to know why the ‘grad student’ Mike McQuerry (yes, you cannot make this stuff up) after walking in, unnoticed to the PSU shower room, why he did NOT IMMEDIATELY intervene! McQ is a former football player and was in his mid 20s (w/Sandusky in his 50s) when the incident occurred.
Why didn’t McQueery physically strike Sandusky? Why did McQ ‘tiptoe’ away and speak with his own father before going forward alerting anyone? Did this ‘discretion’ on the part of McQ lead to his meteoric rise in the PSU coaching staff? Could it be quid pro quo or blackmail?
Not really. Perverts politics always trump even their sexual orientation. You need look no further than how they treat J. Edgar Hoover.
I still don't know if J. Edgar was queer or not, but I do know that he was a great American.
If he was queer, he certainly didn't ever let it interfere with his job performance. In fact, it may have even helped explain why he didn't want them anywhere near sensitive positions in the FBI-- they were too easily compromised and Hoover knew it because he understood the mindset so well.
“Maybe theres one honorable mainstream journalist out there wholl tackle the story from this angle... because it definitely IS part of the story.”

Mainstream journalists?
Not a chance in hell.
Criticizing ANY aspect of the homo perversion is utterly taboo, and a career-ender, worse than the act of murder itself. Just like the N word.
Much safer to attack the “these guys were Christians” angle.
Yes, we cannot discount the possibility but many just naturally “shy away” from any such an encounter, doubt their senses, and seek consultation about the horror witnessed.
Anyone who saw the live press conference last night can figure that out. The board spokesman with the dildo-shaped forehead was so evasive with repeated questions as to how Joe Paterno was informed of the decision that it was downright sickening.
My guess is they gave him a telephone call about 10 minutes before the press conference started. Graham Spanier, on the other hand, had a professionally printed statement to distribute to the press moments after the press conference ended.
Joe Paterno gave the board a really easy out earlier that morning when he announced he would be retiring at the end of the football season, just three more games. They could have accepted his retirement just as graciously but were too determined to take the heat off Graham Spanier and the culture of political correctness which he so carefully built at Penn State.
Nobody give a sh*t about Graham Spanier. By displaying Joe Paterno's scalp at their press conference, they essentially endorsed the very culture and cover-up which led to this scandal in the first place.
Damn right! See my post #28.
This is the source of the problem. The leadership of the universities has been corrupted with swine like Spanier. Spanier - whose academic speciality was the study of wife-swapping - deliberately made Penn sodomite friendly. This is what happens when administrators allow sodomites to hold responsible positions.
All of them need to purged from organizations. Unfortunately, they won’t and children will be molested and killed as a result.
Maybe theres one honorable mainstream journalist out there wholl tackle the story from this angle... because it definitely IS part of the story.”
Part? It is the story. Sexual perverts and sodomites infest our universities and are covering up for one another, even when it involves pedophilia.
Spanier and the board has wanted to get rid of Paterno for years. This was their moment.
Don't get me wrong. JoePa set himself up.
Joe could have been the hero of Penn State back in 1998 if he had stood up and confronted Sandusky, Spanier and everyone else.
Instead, Joe kept his head down and pretended nothing happened. He hired McQueary as an assistant coach and still claims he did not know the details of what McQueary say?
Spanier is a radical liberal. Obama considered Spanier for Secretary of Education in 2008.
Maybe it’s the whole college indoctrination thingy? Is what I saw wrong? Should I tell someone? Probably never occurred to him to go upside the head of the perp.
I'm sure Joe wishes he had done exactly that now. But, at the time, there were still lines of authority and proper protocol which was supposed to be followed, which he did.
Another lesson to conservatives who think we have to fight the enemy according to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.
It’s not just the monstrous nature of the scandal that is so mind boggling, but how could they let this thing go on for so long?
I wonder if JoePa knew about Sandusky's preference for young boys many years before the 1998 investigation.
Perhaps JoePa was threatened that if he stood up then it would be revealed that Paterno was abetting Sandusky by staying silent.
once they let it slide the first time, everyone involved in that process had a vested interest in keeping it quiet, because their previous knowledge would come out as well.
Of course some liberal media outlet has already determined Sandusky is a republican, which has nothing to do with his raping boys, but still not a word that he’s gay, which has everything to do with his crimes.
“Of course some liberal media outlet has already determined Sandusky is a republican, which has nothing to do with his raping boys, but still not a word that hes gay, which has everything to do with his crimes.”
And everything to do with the way it is reported.
Why else is hardly anyone concerned about the person who VIEWED the crime not notifying police immediately?
