At the age of 21, Jimmy Webb rang the cash register. Rivers had signed The Fifth Dimension, and he took five of Webb’s songs for the group’s first album, titled ”Up, Up and Away”.

“Up, Up and Away”

The title song, released in May 1967, made Webb’s reputation and fortune. It even ended up as a TWA commercial.

One of the things I did as Music Director of my college radio station was go to the local record distributors weekly to pick up new releases to see what to add to the playlist. When I put this record on the turntable, it almost brought me to tears. It was beyond beautiful – it was art. The only flaw, a minor one, was the sloppy key change from the middle eight to the last verse. But it was still a masterpiece.

Some other Webb tunes from the album:

“Never Gonna Be the Same”

“Pattern People”

“Rosecrans Blvd.”

Peace In Crisis
November 5, 2011

Ted, one of the elders in our church, used to be a police officer. One day after responding to a report of violence, he said the situation turned life-threatening. A man had stabbed someone and then menacingly turned the blade toward Ted. A fellow officer had taken position and fired his weapon at the assailant as he attacked Ted. The criminal was subdued, but Ted was shot in the crossfire. As he was driven by ambulance to the hospital, he felt deep waves of peace flowing over his soul from the Holy Spirit. Ted felt so tranquil that he was able to offer words of comfort to the law enforcement officer who was emotionally distraught over the crisis.

The Lord Jesus promised us peace in crisis. Just hours before His own crucifixion, Christ comforted His disciples with these words: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

What is your worst fear? If you should have to face it, Christ will be there with you. Trusting Him through prayer makes available “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” and it “will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7).

O the blessedness to nestle
Like a child upon His breast;
Finding ever, as He promised
Perfect comfort, peace, and rest. —Hennessay

The secret of peace is to give every anxious care to God.

This is where history may have been scrubbed. Articles about Jimmy Webb written in the late Sixties referred to a lady named Cynthia. (Or maybe it was Cindy. Or Sylvia.) She teased Webb, led him on, treated him like dirt and eventually married someone else. She was the inspiration for many of the best songs from this era. Recent histories of Webb don’t mention her.

Johnny Rivers let Jimmy Webb write all the songs for the next Fifth Dimension disk, “The Magic Garden”, and it’s a kind of concept album, an idea that became hot after “Days of Future Passed” and “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”.

”Prologue”

”The Magic Garden”

”Summer’s Daughter”

”Carpet Man”

According to accounts of the time, “Carpet Man” is supposed to represent the advice given to Webb by his friends about Cynthia. It was a successful single.

”Requiem: 820 Latham”

”The Girl’s Song”

”The Girl’s Song” was another successful single. The classical composer Sergei Rachmaninov was a master at the art of tonal misdirection, and it’s the unifying idea behind his Piano Concerto #2. Here Webb provides an introduction that doesn’t prepare the listener for the key in which the song begins. It’s a brilliant stroke.

”The Worst That Could Happen”

So Cynthia married someone else. Watch the key change at 1:26 with the middle eight, and the chords he uses at “A woman like you needs a house and a home” to get back to the original key. It’s magnificent writing. (I couldn’t find the album version, but someone was kind enough to post the single version and cut it off before the group segued into Laura Nyro”s “Wedding Bell Blues”.)

”Orange Air”

”Paper Cup”

Another successful single.
